My old mare was shivering out in the field this morning and she wintered out fine last year? Should i start rugging already? Is anyone else rugging up yet? Especially if they are going to winter out?
We are not rugging ours yet but if they had been shivering because of all this rain we would have done. I think you have to treat each horse as an individual and give them what they need.
Playing it by ear at the moment.
No fill turnout if it's raining heavily though one night this week was really cold and raining heavily so I upped it to something a bit thicker with a neck.
Well I've got 3 horses and all are at different stages! My mare is in on box rest anyway, so just has a fleece on. My native yearling is out naked, and my warmblood yearling has yesterday and today had a shower sheet on only.
My old boy has a rug on if it's going to rain overnight as he can feel the cold even with his layer of blubber. All of ours have come in the last two nights because of sideways rain. I think I fuss too much somtimes but the older one will be the one that I worry about the most. Its a real headache when the weather is changeable.
On the first day we had bad rain my boy came in shivering. Think I may just do FNLWTO overnight if temperature is low and maybe LW during the day if heavy rain.
Really cross we are already thinking of it in August! Not right!
Only a waterproof sheet, yesterday my two were shivering but I think it was the combined wind and rain through day-night-day so they had a long time, back out in rugs now just so they aren't caked in mud for comp. tomorrow!
Two of ours are rugged due to the huge amount of rain we are getting, my delicate flower of a TB and our oldie (40 yrs). They are only having lw sheets on but the tack room already looks like a chinese laundry with rugs in various stages of drying out hanging everywhere, count at the moment is 6 on the go. On the plus side, havent seen a fly for days!!
Mine just has his fly sheet on, have recently moved to a new yard and all their horses are rugged up, in a minimum of a summer sheet, in an indoor barn with doors closed, but were sticking to fly sheet unless he lets me know otherwise. Every horse is different and if he was cold at all he would have more rugs on
L/W turn out for my warmblood, and m/w turnout for skinny tb.
Overnight both have been wearing sheets all summer (becasue I am 'old school', clearly) and now the tb has a fleece over the top, whilst the wb is wearing just a fleece.
i have 3 in lite weights and 1 in medium weight. my gelding doesnt do bad weather so tends to spend most of his time rugged in less its nice and warm.
we have had lots or rain and it gets windy (lincolnshire). my fields dont have much shelter as we are surrounded by farmers fields.
anyone else getting the feeling its gonna be a long old winter.!!!!!
I've been using a rain sheet overnight (Star is out 24/7 through summer), but a couple of nights this week she's had a medium weight rug on and been nicely warm, not hot. Last night she came in because there's been no escape from the rain for so long and she has no field shelter. She obviously made the most of it cos she was covered in shavings this morning!
Just a rainsheet when he's been out for the last few days because of the rain and wind - he's out at night at the moment and his field is quite open. Nothing on when he's in. He's a Sec D and despite best efforts has gained some extra 'poundage' over the summer so I'll delay rugging him as long as possible!
No, no rug as yet - although it is starting to get very cold here overnight (frost!) even though it is still technically summer Horse is starting to get wooly!
