My cob only gets a rainsheet on when it is heavy rain/wind, but I felt so sorry for him last night as it was freezing sideways sleet/snow and he was having to find his grass under all the snow, that I put a proper rug on him for the first time.

When I got there this morning he was standing there looking pretty hot and fed up.

It just showed me that putting a rug on hm made ME feel better, but obviously not him!

Anyone else still have a happy naked horse?

Yup!

I have an infoal KWPN broodie and a TBx 4 yr old on her winter hols having been backed - both naked and out 24/7.

Plenty of hay (near as damn it adlib - although there wasn't much left admittedly this morning before I put more out) a hard feed once a day, large field with naturel shelter from wind. I was bit worried they would be chilly this morning and I have seen the 4 yr old shiver if she gets very wet and can't get out of the wind, but they were fine in the snow this morning. Both as happy as Larry!

i felt a very cruel owner the other day :o

It was mild so i took my horses rugs off for some air and so they could gallop about in the big field and of course they rolled in the muddiest bit of the field. I then proceeded to cut my hand open and there was blood everywhere, so had to finish everything one handed as it was dripping off my elbow including bringing them back into their winter paddock. couldnt wait for the horses to dry and i couldnt put them on over the top of the wet mud so i left them off. I was shocked when i went up the next morning and felt between there legs, they were lovely and toasty! they do have adlib haylage though so they can keepthemselves warm. i just felt aweful for it lol :D

i always make sure not to overug as such, never sweating or feeling too hot and bothered, just goes to prove they didnt need it at all, so il be leaving them off from now on unless its snowing, raining or very bitterly cold.

They might actually go in the shelter for once instead of standing behind it!

Yes both my youngsters doing really well naked. The do have the option of shelter but do not seem to bother much with it.

Last cold spell we have they looked as if they were sprinkled with sugar as the frost was all over them as well as everywhere else, but they seemed quite happy! They are loving digging in snow and making a real mess!

No :o Even baby coblet now has a MW rug, with a neck cover...TB is in 2 HW full necks, pony is also in a HW TO with neck and under rug.

Have new rugs and hoods on order also!

Yes, me! 3 year old WB. Out 24/7 with adlib hay and natural shelter.

I have nearly caved so many times and swear i'm going to put a rug on him but every time I go to the field he's happy as anything and feels warm so I go away feeling relieved. It seems to be my daily ritual!

His mum was a hot horse as well. I did cave and put a rug on her because it was snowing. Went back to check on her and she was sweating

2 X Rising 3 yr old and 1 x rising 4 yr old - all very happy out 24/7 and unrugged.

My HW coblet is still naked. He has a coat to rival a Yak! Wimpy NF has a coat that would be put to shame by the finest T.B & is sporting a HW with neck!

Yep. Benji is still naked and will remain that way. Loads of hay and shelter and his marvellous home grown coat are serving him well xx

My gelding is still naked and will be all winter, out 24/7. He is fat and hairy and has a field shelter and high hedges he doesn't need a rug.

2 of my 3 are naked - but then neither of those 2 are in work, and both are fat yetties.
The other however is clipped out and rugged to the hilt as she is a princess!

Poor, abused neddies that they are ....

Sounds really daft but I have just taken my boy's fleece off. He is on box rest and sweating a lot with the recent mild weather, actually considered clipping some of his coat off. I was worried he would chill as he was so wet and just didn't dry off without the fleece, so I put fleece on at night. Now it is cold he is dry and doesn't need it, toasty warm.

Two of my three are out naked. One of them has always been clipped, stabled and heavily rugged but is out hairy and naked for the first time in 13 yrs and looking really well for it.
My 21yr old TB is also doing her first winter out but has a MW rug on with a liner on really cold nights. They are all content and relaxed and happily munching on their hay.

My oldie is rugged by my haffie is never rugged - even at minus 20 which we get here. But they are in at night (again she is unrugged). Vet has to clip her neck to get a needle in for jabs!!

I gave in today too and rugged mine. We don't have snow but the field is in an appalling state and they are having to plod through really deep mud which means their legs are wet a lot of the time. (they do have a shelter) She also has some rain scald along her back. Haven't seen her shivering but she hasn't felt that warm either.

My YO has two miniature shetlands that aren't rugged but I'm afraid I can't say the same about mine. In fairness, our grazing is exposed moorland grazing with only dry stone walls for shelter, so unless a horse has a very thick coat (like the shetlands) then it would really feel the cold up here. My Arab is 20 and has a touch of arthritis, so she does need one, though her thickest rug is a medium weight with a neck cover, so she isn't over-rugged. And our Welsh D is also rugged, though he usually only wears a medium weight without a neck cover, because his coat isn't really thick enough for the winds we get up here (they're out 24/7 most of the time). All being well, they will both have their rugs off tomorrow during the day so they can have a good play in the snow :D

1 naked NF filly, and fluffy with it. Will remain naked.
1 with just a normal MW Masta, no neck. Will turn naked when the sun is out for longer than a day!

Yup, and it causes much yard tittle tattle :). Like OP mine has rain sheet for heavy rain and wind as she isn’t keen on that mix but she does come in at night. The day she starts to look poor or miserable is the day I change her management.

Other than the ones that are ridden they are all naked. thing I may have upset the ex owner of a mare today who came here underweight and we were told she needed stabling loads of feed and heavyweight rugs as she really felt the cold. the ex owner saw her living out (with a shelter) no rug just on haylage and what sounds to be around half the hard feed she used to get and looking a lot more round than she had ever seen her! I think she was torn between being upset that the mare was being kept the opposite of the way she had been and happy because she looked so much better :D Obviously if she had needed rugging she would have had one but I am wondering if she was actually too hot with the old owner as she is obviously liking the life she has now.
