I am feeling quite low at the moment I have a stinking cold and cough which started on the day of the storm and storm Darragh really hasn't helped .The horses are easy enough to do but by the time I have walked the dogs and done the horses I am washed out .The storm has caused major damage to a land drain and the garden fence is trashed plus.roof tiles have moved about at the corners ( repair in hand on the roof but our guy is very busy with more urgent work)The land drain has been dug out and pipe work has been put in to take the water away from the house (it was beginning to come into the air bricks!!! which we had to sandbag until it could be fixed)
However we now have an area 5 foot wide the entire length of the garden and on into the field feeding into a drainage ditch.
This means we have a huge area of muddy infill which is traipsing into the house via the dogs feet and our boots it's really hard to avoid walking on part of it
I look out at the trashed fence and it's depressing. We have ordered the replacement panels which should come in a week or so .I'm sure I'll feel more up beat when I shake off this bad head cold but currently it seems endless trying to keep the place clean and tidy .and the area can't even be grass seed until spring.
Arghhhh I hate this current British weather.!!!!

I luckily don’t have it but know really quite a few people who have said the same about. Really nasty sounding cold/virus that’s taken some getting over.
I feel like I’m continually chasing my tail at the moment and know the feeling of trying desperately to keep dog and all dirt to a minimum, everywhere is so muddy, even the roads.
Every where I look I feel like I see dirt and more jobs I don’t have time to do 😫

Hope you feel better soon xx

I'm sorry you're feeling down. It's a rubbish time of year, dark and dank. I'm 11 days post a horrible bug and still feeling exhausted. Plus the expectation of being full of seasonal cheer, bah humbug 😄 Commuting both directions in the dark and only seeing the horses in daylight at weekends. Miserable! I suppose the silver lining is that it limits how often I can see the full extent of the mud 😂

I'm hanging on to the thought that it's less than a week until the shortest day. Yes, the weather is often worse January and February, but at least there will gradually be more useable day available and less groping around by head torch. Hang in there, spring is coming..... Eventually!

Really sorry to hear that you are feeling so low at the moment. I’m sure being ill has a lot to do with how you are feeling. Problems thaat are bad enough when we are well, can feel totally overwhelming when we are ill and fighting our own body’s wellness issues. As you start to feel better, so external things will come more into perspective. Just be kind to yourself, rest and know that each day is a day nearer to recovery.
Having recently had a hip replacement, I then picked up a virus - probably from grand children- and I did feel very low for a couple of days. Went out on a Christmas do last night, even though I wasn’t feeling up to it, and today I feel so much better and life is definitely brighter!
On a practical note, some field mats or old carpet on the muddy patch would help if you know anyone who has any? Mud will wash off most things, so it’s not permanent. I speak as someone with a very wet garden , muddy roadways and a big German Shepherd! Hope you feel better soon.

Very sorry to hear you are having a tough time setterlover. I always feel fatigued recently, I find that the daily chores wipe me out and then I have no energy to ride or do other nice things. I don't know if it's the lack of sunlight, the greyness or the extra slog of more mucking out to do. It all just seems to add up. I hope that things get better for you soon.

I have caught it too. Awful sore throat. It does make one feel very miserable. And just when I had sorted out my mounting problems and resolved to hack this week. I have accidretally become a rider who doesnt ride in winter.
Me too, very nasty sore throat and feeling drained of all energy

Sorry you are feeling rather down. I think Christmas is rather a strain, though I enjoy it, there is so much extra to do and if you are under the weather with a cold it can be daunting. But we are nearly at the darkest day and then we are on the way up, it is so much easier when it is a bit lighter, even if still cold and wet. I’ve just found one pony has thrush in his feet, another thing to deal with I could well do without at the moment!

I know what you mean, I had a horrible cold end of October which took ages to go, had about 5 days and then got another one which wiped the beginning of November when the weather was perfect for riding and outside jobs. I felt better in time for the awful weather and now have no motivation whatsoever and like you walking the dogs and doing horses wipes me out. Soon be the shortest day so hopefully that will help. Hope you are soon feeling better.

I had 2 1/2 weeks of horrendous cold (the 4 days where I couldn’t sleep/ woke up every 30 mins were fun, although it did mean that for once when I needed to get out of bed at 5am it was fairly easy to do as wasn’t really asleep anyway!)

Just started to get rid of it this week to have a random endometriosis flare which I’ve not had to this extent for a while / shouldn’t really have as that’s what the drugs are for. This is not the normal I’d like to go back to so hopefully it does one soon.

That was just settling down but have then had works Xmas party last night & festivities at yard today

Despite extremely conservative drinking (we’re talking 2 drinks last night & 1 x Bailey’s today) body is now very angry with me (The several hours of dancing last night & lugging obstacles about today might also not have been helpful… neither will have been gorging on fuddle after only having a bit of toast earlier!)

Sadly I can’t crawl in a corner and sleep for 2 days as need to go to work tomorrow!

Blimey! That's quite enough to be dealing with! Can you do anything with a few pallets and boards to create a walkway? Get supplies in of honey and lemon (and a little tot of something if you so wish) and hibernate. Sod Christmas - have fun when you feel better.

Can you get some mud control mats for the interim at least? Could sell them after if you won't need them long term.

Aye you taking Vit D and C?

Obviously what and how much depends on your personal health etc., but all things being equal they really do help.

It’s not just you OP. I’m just back to feeling normal ish today after about a fortnight of horrendous virus and cough, the cough is lingering but I can at least now sleep and my ribs aren’t as uncomfortable. I’m not normally one to suffer with coughs and colds.

I don’t think bashing some fencing back in on top of the hill in the driving wind and rain the other week helped matters!

I’m well used to dealing with the horses when I’m feeling a bit unwell but with the cough I could hardly get my breath to walk across the field, let along push a wheelbarrow up hill! My poor non-horsey dad has been coming round and has done the majority of my poo picking (mine live out) and the freelance girl I use sometimes has been a few times to help out. Horses are perfectly fine of course but it’s quite unsettling to have been so ill I had to ask for help.

If it’s any consolation, we’ve had a few dry days here and my freelancer kindly moved mine into a new field last weekend (normal rotation) so I’m fending mud off a little. At least for a few weeks until the grass cover reduces and it’s wet again!

Try to hold onto it’s nearly the shortest day. Then in theory it’s uphill from there……

Actually felt a wee bit brighter today though the cough is still hacking away I am still doing only what I have to do but managed to do the horses and dogs am and pm without feeling absolutely wiped out Still not doing much else but hopefully by the weekend if I take things easy we can do some work clearing up the trashed fencing.

Yes a little bit. Not poorly though just feeling a bit tired and lacking energy. I’ve been super busy with work and don’t feel like I’ve really had time to catch my breath these past few days but keep telling myself I’ll get plenty of time once we get to Christmas and I’ll be quieter after Christmas anyway. (I’m a courier so practically playing Santa at the moment).

On the plus side my phone is saying winter solstice has moved and today is the shortest day! 😊
