So everyone is hating the wet weather and all the mud. Is anyone elses lovely horses having to stay in because of it? I would love to have mine out, but he has awful feet, and the wet then dry is making them so much worse so he is having to stay in some days!

Is anyone elses in because of feet or is it just mine?!

Yep mine are in at the moment. Both have had punctured soles from their feet being so soft from standing in wet all day.

Both have only ever had front shoes on but both are having back shoes put on now. Haven't got a choice with my gelding as the puncture was so deep he is having to have pads put on.

Well if you count having an infection in the pedal bone from a cracked hoof then yes, and the other one will only stay out for an hour on his own, so got both in for most of the time at the moment happy days:)

Mine are in at the moment but they are happy in and even when my old boy undid his chain on his door he didn't bother going out of his stable and was just happy looking out from the stable door :D

I am glad its not just me, i felt bad that he is in (even though its for his own good) just because of a bit of rain!

He has really soft soles, and brittle walls, which means that our farrier is struggling with fitting his shoes (which he has to wear otherwise he would be crippled)

Anyone have a magic treatment?

My Section D refuses to go out and has done for a while,so she is warm and snug in her stable, looking like the cat that's got the cream.WB has some days in as he struggles with the poached ground and stands around looking miserable. He barely walks from the hay-net in the paddock,so may as well stay in when it's really bad, like it's been today.Irish bog horse is at home in the swamp and has no problems getting around,so he stays out during the day. Everyone is getting really fed up though,as it's just interminable. We need to shift the UK closer to the Azores.

mine have been in every night since november, but my mare has still managed to get mud fever, fields are soooo bad. boy also over-reached on monday. they have been in since then- except took them for 2 walks am and pm tuesday and out for 1 hour in tiny paddock in the rain today. grazed, but at soon as they saw me they rushed over to come in. they do go into a barn together, so can interact like in the field and have space to move around. until we get some dry they will be limited turn out, but honestly they are so chilled and just want hay!
i don't mind a cold snap, like we normally get in jan-feb, i hate this constant wet

Considering my boy used to hate being in, he has jumped out his field twice this winter, and is always waiting to come in. And doesn't care when others go out. He seems quite happy, and goes on the walker and ridden or walked or lunged each day. And for a skinny tb he is looking better for being in!

Are you all still riding etc? Do you find they get stiff?

Mine lives out and we don't have hardstanding, so he's on grass or mud 24/7. He is coping well, unshod, hacked out this morning with a spring in his step and got a compliment from the vet (we rode there for his annual vaccinations) about the lack of mud rash and good condition of horse and feet :) So soft soles and bad feet aren't necessarily caused by wet, they're just exacerbated by it.

However although the horse is coping really well, I'm fed up with only getting one day a week dry enough to ride! It is depressing and I am also tired of my car being full of wet headcollars, lead ropes, tack, hoof boots, muddy feed buckets and also wet, mud encrusted me! And I am tired of dragging huge quantities of hay across a sea of mud to find a dry(ish) spot for the horse to stand and eat it!

That's my rant :o On a positive note, I did get a nice (dry) ride this morning, and the forecast says tomorrow morning is to be nice enough to ride too. Even if I do pay for that with the storm that's forecast for Friday and Saturday

Our are in at night and can't wait to come in! Neat iodine hardens the soles we found this out when one of ours got an abcess and when we scrubbed it and then poured iodine on it, Within about a week his soles were slot better

BrightBay, where are you, it is meant to rain all day for us tomorrow, and I certainly didnt get a dry ride today :( When ours were out 24/7 it was horrible with all the mud so I am thankful I have moved to where we are now! I feel your pain on that!

Got some Iodine too Matt and Jack, got too many hoof ointments don't know which to use!! lol

My old boy constantly lost his shoes due to bad hooves about six months ago then I started adding biotin to his feed and now the farrier is very pleased with his feet and he is holding his shoes on now, I have even managed to go six weeks between a farrier visit last time :D

Ours is on Farriers Formula which I think has that in! Jealous of you ours had just got to that point before all this!!

Mine is in and TBH I think it would be cruel to turn him out all day at the moment, he is crying to come in after an hour if he is out anyway. I ride him and/or hand graze him every day, he has a good sized stable so I can put readigrass steamed in one corner, hay in another, feed near the door and his water, so he trundles about 'grazing' but inside. We are underwater and the grass is ruined. I'd rather have him in now and preserve the grass for the summer time, we have no winter/summer paddocks so it is as much about land management as taking care of his needs.

I'm so lucky I'm on sand. So no mud. But we are getting large areas of standing water now. I do have to walk through a 12ft ish stretch of fetlock deep mud when walking down to the field and crossing this twice a day she has now got mud fever :(

Not suffering from it the fields are sand so drain well and we have no mud The girls even managed to ride in the field today without marking it one has front shoes the other is barefoot. We do have areas of water lying but the grass is green if very short
Ponies still out 24/7 lovely hard feet and no mud fever so cant complain. I would rather it rained until Easter than have snow and ice though as I have to drive to the ponies and I hate sliding around when I am driving

Just looked at the forecast for where I am in the northwest - nice tomorrow then back to the usual rain rain and more bloody rain. The school is flooded as well so barely rideable. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm actually starting to feel quite down all the rain. I've only just realised that I really do get affected by the weather!

Livery has had to close the fields due to current flooding and forcast. Hopefully this wont last too long, and we might be able to use the back field in rotation until our usual ones drain a little.

Crossing fingers things improve quickly. Harry doesn't want to be out, but he really needs to let off some steam.
As for Bramble..... who knows how I'll get him out and stay in one piece when it finally comes to it?! He's a good boy, but going a little stir crazy.

I've had enough too :(

How much rain are we supposed to get?!?

No/very limited turn out for what feels a life time as fields are beyond wet, P is fed up of staying in, as lanes to the yard are flooded it takes 3 times longer to get there & back before/after work, then the chores take longer ... Then the same after work.

I thought horses were supposed to he fun?! :(

You could try upping his zinc and copper a bit. Farriers formula only has 89mg copper and 250mg zinc per serving which sounds a little low.
I give mine 175mg copper and 525mg of zinc daily and his feet are amazing (he's barefoot), might be worth a try :)
