As title really... I turn my welsh out at night and in during the day, I find it helps keeps his weight down and he doesn't get sunburnt or attacked by the flies (he has a sarcoid so less flies the better!!)

Nope, I've been doing it for years, winter or summer. Just makes more sense, grass less sugary at night & don't have to worry about frosty grass & sun in winter. Also riding/vets/Farrier/back person visits tend to happen in the day :)

Only when really hot & horrid.

Winter they are in at night & out at day, or out 24/7 depending on who they are.
Spring/summer/autumn out 24/7 tho prob moved to a small paddock in day & muzzled in bigger paddock at night.

They do all have access to field shelters tho, also tree shade.

My horses are currently out 27/7. However, the 2 shetland ponies are out during the day and in at night. The reason behind this is that during the day there are flies and it is generally warmer which results in shetlands eating less due to being agitated by heat and flies. During the night there are no flies and it is nice and cool so they stuff their faces!! May sound slightly harsh on poor ponies but works for us!

I always do out at night, in during day through the summer for the reasons you have suggested.

It does surprise me that I'm in a minority at my yard though, many of the liveries keep their in overnight routine.

I'm an 'out at night, in during the day' owner in Spring/Summer and Autumn and in the Winter i'm a 'out in the day, in overnight' owner!

Echo Elleskywalker's post for all the reasons stated :)

It's our yard policy during the Winter months to be on turnout during the day only. In the Spring/Summer and Autumn months, we can do what suits each individual horse which is great.

Glad some of you do it then, I always get bizarre looks when Im turning out! Most leave them out 24/7 but being native I cant run the risk of lami / overweight pony! :) and he sleeps all day in his stable like the pampered pony he is :)

Mine are brought in about eight thirty and ATM they are out by two except fatty who stays in longer .
Once the flys get awful they are in all day .

Both of mine are out at night and in during the day and both are muzzled. One is approaching 20 and mildly arthritic but also a bit of a porker. The other is barefoot. For both I prefer them to get restricted access to the grass via muzzling and ideally when the sugar levels are low. Both are sensitive to fly bites also so benefit from avoiding flies too.
In the winter they are out during the day and in at night though.

Mine goes out of a night to avoid pollen at it's highest or he turns into a coughing wheezing mess and has his equilibrium field mask on of a night. Its Summer Pasture Related Airway obstruction or something like that? I can't remember the full name of the top of my head, but it's vets advice and she's coming again at the start of June to decide if he can continue like this/go out 24:7 for the summer/ go onto an inhaler with some meds. I'm the only one of the stable liveries to use this routine, but luckily field ponies are near by to keep him company!

Mine are out in day and in at night. Mainly because my stables are wooden ones and egret really stuffy in the day when it is warm whereas there fields are on hills so get a breeze. Also my older boy suffers when gets too much grass and my tb goes loopy on too much grass so they go out days which round my work make it shorter time than if were out overnight.

Tried it with my boy - he didn't rest when turned out at night so gave up. Works for some horses (his current stable neighbour, for example) but not for all.

I would LOVE to be able to turn him out 24/7 when the weather's turned . . . but he's a stressy type and he drops weight and is a slug to ride if I do that.

P

Yes I've been doing that since the weather has got warmer and the grass has been growing. He comes in at 7am to soaked hay, has a little snooze in his stable, doesn't get attacked by flies or sunburnt. I then ride in the evening and he goes back out with a muzzle on around 7pm. He hates the flies, and he is black with lots of hair so doesn't cope well in hot weather. It also helps me to keep his weight down.

I do....to help my ulcer horse lose weight... It's defo working as vet saw him yesterday and commented that he looks slimmer. He has soaked hay in the stable thru the day.

You guys like to give yourselves extra work don't you! ;-)

We have 2 in at night in winter but once it hits March they are out and out 24/7! I don't know what countries you all live in but, in.the UK I don't find we have long periods of hot weather EVER! I have never really understood the shutting horses away from the warm/sun and then putting them out in the dark. Maybe it's just me, maybe we don't suffer the same fly issues here?

Ours love to lie out in the sunshine and they have options to stand in the shade, whether It's the field shelter or the hedges/trees. That, in my mind is all horses need. I would never keep my horse on a yard where turnout was a small square paddock with no shade /shelter

This^ mine are out at night year round for the above reasons, it means they get a constant 13 hours of turnout year round

One of mine comes in through the day to reduce his intake of the sugary daytime grass because he can no longer wear a grazing muzzle and I'm worried about him getting laminitis.

mine go out at night and in during the day. They would be out 24/7 except - 2 of them need grazing muzzles and I don't think it's right to leave those on 24 hours a day (and if you take them off even for an hour they just scoff the same amount they would have done if left out all day without); and - 1 of them has a curly coat (its his breed) and he gets terribly hot if out during the day so I prefer him to be in - as there is not that much shelter in the field. Plus one of the 2 fatties is slightly prone to sunburn and has a sensitive skin so again think its better for him to be out of the worst of the heat and flies.

Mine are out at night in Summer. It's very little extra work to them being out 24/7, and it means when I want to ride he isn't grass bloated and sluggish, he also doesn't eat much when he's in during the day, one slice of hay and a small feed - he leaves anymore so clearly not hungry! He does get fed Oats in summer though for a little extra energy. The fields also lack shade and have seriously nasty flies. He comes in at about 9am and goes out at 4pm when I'm at Uni. When I'm back at home these hours will tweak for me to fit in around work hours. He'll probably be in at 5.30am for me to ride and go out again when mum gets home at 3pm. Or come in at 7am and then I'll ride in the evening after work, so he'll go out again at about 7.30pm.

Mine are out at night and in during the day, they switched from the other way around last week.

Both are good doers (one could do with getting a bit slimmer) plus one hates the sun, even what we have had this last week makes her miserable if you force her to be out in it. Also keeps them away from the worst of the flies. They are always either waiting at the gate to come in or come cantering up as soon as they see me. They like being in, they usually come in have a bit of hay and then sleep. They are in a corner of the workshop so it is also a bit social for them as they are next to the guys when they are working on the tractors etc (another plus is they are near all the load noises of tools and machinery and don't usually bat an eyelid at that sort of thing).

Majority of us live in the UK, and can you not remember all the hot weather we had last summer? I even have sunburn from this weekend and wasn't in it very long.
