ours is shooting up ! horses leaving the hay and grazing madly ! is it normal in january ? dont ever remember it before but then have never really thought about it as wasnt paying a mortgage for hay !!

cant be sure but when i ve looked over longingly from the winter grazing to the summer grazing it does look very very green and lush already!!!

Oooo I hope so.

I've also never been so obsessed with the grass growth before, but now the hay costs so much, everything they can find out in the field is a bonus.

I googled last night to see what temperature the grass will grow at - apparently it will grow if its over 5 degrees, so with the mild temperatures of 10 degrees we've had down south this week - maybe it is.

Funnily enough, I was only thinking the same thing today! Despite it being wet and muddy my pony abandoned his hay net for the field and started grazing enthusiastically as though it was spring. Looking at the ungrazed field over the fence, I was sure it was greener than last time I looked but decided it was just wishful thinking! Maybe not . . .

Me too I have been going through 2 round bales of Haylage a week and this week there is loads left, am going to cancel this weeks order, yea hey I feel some shopping comming on it was about 12 here today!

Ours is.
Not much, but definitely new growth going on.
He's not finishing his (pretty small) haynet every day, and is mostly seen grazing.
Last year he was doing a massive net every day and there was no grass at all.

ours is still frozen in Aberdeen, it thawed long enough to get rid of the snow and to rain/sleet for a day and then froze so everything from the car park to the yard and the field all a frozen skating rink. Some of the horses are coming in with bruised soles because the ground is so bad...... :-(
