My asbo horse is now rising 6 and I have felt of late that we are really starting to get somewhere. He was becoming much calmer and much safer to ride, then over the past few days we have had strong winds and my horse is behaving like a fruit loop again. Snorting, leaping, tense, unfocused - you name it!! Its driving me nuts!

Anyone else own a horse like this? What did you do about it?

All help gratefully received!!! :o:o

the PONIO i ride(sorry fumanchu couldnt resist) is only 4 gets a bit spooky and sometimes feels tense in the wind but with a little kicking on and reasurence he's fine again, I try to give him something to think about very lucky with him really. sori for lack of advice x

Yes! Retired horse has decided he's a colt again, my sister had to lead him up from his field yesterday in windy weather, it's about a 15 minute walk, he usually just plods along, but he can be a handful so I usually ride him bareback or lead him in a bridle... Anyways, she brought him up in a headcollar (a dually one, so it's not like she didn't have brakes!), and apparently he was bucking, rearing, cantering on the spot and snorting like a steam train :p I think it was just the breezy weather... Yay for mad horses!

Mine really is a plonker. I must've done something very bad to end up with him :D

I can't give him anything to think about - I'm too busy thinking about how to survive the experience lol!

Would REALLY like some tips......... pretty please?

Lol @ ponio - whole can of worms right there!

When first got my mare I had trouble leading her across the yard in the wind never mind riding in it and usually didnt even try to get onboard.

As she settled and trusted us more I rode a little in low winds with her on her toes but manageable. Now we ride in strong winds but only in the school and flatwork. She can have her spooky moments where she does a kermit forg impression leaping with head between knees but is fine.

here is a video of us in a lesson yest in the wind -she forgot all about it working so hard lol -

wow - she's a beauty! Looks like you had a nicer day than me yesterday - you had the wind but at least you had some sunshine lol. I had wind and rain! (west coast of Scotland *sigh*)

Maybe I'll just need to back off him for a couple of days and see if he settles a bit

Mine is silly in the wind. Its not so much the wind blowing up her tail its henoise. So i put a fod of cotton wool in her ears sometimes put a fly fringe with ears n over the top it really muffles the noise. If you do this be careful when you take it out as sometimes then the normal volume of noise can spook them. Although mine has always be fine.
I personally wouldnt ride because of wind because my riding can be limited at times so my mare has to get on with it! There a pain arent they??

Pretty sure its the noise that upsets mine too, was wondering if there were any good ways to desensitise them to riding in the wind lol. Would defo try your suggestion except asbo has a chronic ear phobia *sign* :(
