My horse is going through a spooky-explosive-panicky mode one day then co-operative and calm the next, mainly if lunged. He's had his teeth done, shod regularly, saddle is due but I can't see or find any pressure or tender points.

Tonight it was pouring with rain, but he was rugged up so not like I put a saddle on a wet back. Went to get on him, usual mounting block as too big to get on from the ground, humped his back; then started to boggle eye at something in the bushes around the arena, gave a small buck and nap when I pushed him on. He felt like he was going to explode so I decided to untack and loose school him to watch him.

Boy oh boy, when I led him into the arena he half reared, nearly came on top of me and got away, cantering down the yard slipping on tarmac. By this point I admit I was struggling to keep temper. Friend caught him but I calmly got hold of him and turned him in the school, he went off bucking, leaping and squealing. I took no notice of him but sent him on with lunge whip held low. When he saw I wasn't getting cross - as in the past - he settled.

Did some loose schooling, no signs of stiffness etc (not judging by the acrobatic, cartwheels!!) so tacked him up and remounted. Now his back was sopping wet but used a thick numnah. Gingerly mounted him and tactfully but assertively asked him to walk on. All was well.

One of the things my trainer friend does with him is to walk a few strides and if he starts to spook or get silly, she puts him straight into trot of 20m, 15m and 10m circles, figures of 8, then canters. After 10-15 minutes he is so much calmer, maybe this expends his energy. She is much quicker at mounting him and is lot more confident than me.

He's fed haylage, turned out 12 hours a day, fed D&H leisure mix, loads of chaff and small amount of speedibeet. Don't think its excessive sugar.

He was clipped 10 days ago and tonight with the rain, maybe feeling arsey and rebellious. He has that streak.

Be interested if anyone else's horse is going through a similar phase!

Oh yes, me too! And mine isn't rugged, lives out and gets a handful of chaff each day just to put Winter Glow in.

Barmy animal at the moment, I am putting it down to coat change/autumn coming. Am also waiting for back person to assess him before I ride him again!

I wouldn't say explosive exactly but definitley got one on him tonight (4yr old). I should have known better than to ride as when I went to catch him he marched to the gate ahead of me and Will', obviously thought he was coming in for food, pipe, slippers and bed!

Anyway I tacked him up and took him round the fields. Had issues with next door's geese, spun round and tried to bugger off but managed to pull him up. Then one of the more sensible horses did a Shergar round the field and planted other ideas in C's head! I ended up walking half of the ride and took him in the school just to let him know he doesn't get out of work that easily, a big 'ask' given the rain etc. Rode him a bit in walk and trot and good as gold so feeling back in the Alpha female position again! I think a few are feeling a bit good at the moment......

Mine has been but she has just come into proper work after being backed a while ago and lets say she is taking to throwing the toys out the pram quite a bit! She's worse in the school than out hacking, lunging is always near dangerous for the 1st few mins as she does like to turn herself inside + out but i just ignore it and she then does do some nice work i just wish it was when we start out and not just at the end of a 20 min lunging session! Riding her in the school i've left up to my trainer as she has been more than a handful lately and is really for a very experienced rider to sort out,her specialities are: stop, spin, fly buck and then repeat again that process, drop the shoulder, buck. If you put your leg on-she kicks out or bucks.Oh why did i get myself a young warmblood.... cos i'm mad.....but i love her and i know she'll be fab when we sort her.

My boy is like a coiled spring at the moment, he did have a proper strop last week with his head between his legs. To be fair to him he only moved to the yard 2 weeks ago, is a youngster, and is being brought back into work slowly. He's dozy as anything on the lunge though. Lulls you into a false sense of security.

Thoughts
Cutting teeth--ours was supposed to be 4 when he came to us (vetted) but took 2 years to finish teething Cheek teeth can catch inside of mouth
Feeding ahead of work done--may not need Leisure Mix when there is 'flush' of grass Speedibeet/Hi Fi Lite some chaffs high in sugars OK for reward for coming in from field
Wind and rain after quiet weather spell
You clipped so feels the weather on his skin and he had rug on all day
Think you would be arsy if you went out naked in wind and rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exercise sheet maybe but lunge in it first
Stand up in stirrups a couple of minutes when you just get on--having had saddle on 10 mins so back has warmed up before you get on, remember you just pulled off nice warm rug
You need to think ahead of a youngster, keep their mind occupied etc--problems usually due to misunderstandings or discomfort
Good luck it is worth your patience
