Just had a call from the yard to say that for the 4th time in 2 weeks Jack has jumped the 5 bar gate out of the field and brought himself into his stable. There is a shelter in the field and he has a rug on but he just hates getting wet.

I don't want him to do himself an injury - or indeed to encourage others to follow - but I can't be there all the time either to bring him in at the first sign of extended rainfall and equally don't want him standing in all the time incase it rains.

Ideas anyone?

My horse refuses to leave his stable when it is raining.

It do not think there is much you can do, he has a shelter and he has a rug on, he just isnt a wet weather person. Does he have a full neck rug on?

yep - so short of putting wellies on him and sticking an umbrella onto the rug to cover his face I dunno what else I can do.

Have visions of said horse discussing wet manes and not being able to do a thing with them with his stablemates

Its very sweet when they decide what they'll do about the weather. Mine will tolerate a shower or drizzle but big rain, no way.

My TBx does

It means she's nearly always rugged (and frequently gets too hot

) in case it rains. Last time she tried to come in she ended up with two huge gashes on her side where she wriggled under the fence.

Oh bless!
Its not a good way to be esp in Scotland.

I think you are going to have to go for the brolly and welly accessories.

Mine was frozen this morning, so I brought her in, rugged and fed her, and was considering keeping her in for the day, but she started shoving the door open with her nose, so I thought, right, out it is then.
She's currently out with her rambo duo with the hood up!

TBH though, if this rain keeps up, I'll be bringing her in tonight whether she wants it or not!

Mine's the same. Three drops of rain anywhere near him, and he's back to bed immediately. And if it comes on to rain, even lightly, while we're out, his head goes tight into his knees and suddenly I've got nothing in front. Luckily he doesn't jump so he stays put in his field but always bags first place under the trees, and such a picture of misery greets me!
Cruel mummy!!

Funny you say that Ellies_mum2 his mane does go wavy after it's been wet and I tease him mercilissly about being a big girl. Perhaps it's my fault

Mm, I cant remember who it is, Or where it is. I remember seeing some photos, where theres a stable, and then a small cornered off area, so the horse can take it self in or out of the stable depending.

mine take themselves in their shelters as and when.
usually bey is in there unless its fine weather, shantih isnt too bothered but will go and stand in there if bey is(and its raining) and kaya will be wherever the food is!

I don't think you can do much about it unless you can run some electric tape along higher than the gate to try and deter him from wanting to go near it of his own accord.
But that could be even more dangerous if he still tries to jump it and becomes entangled.

Does he share the field? Are his field companions left out in the rain?

Have a look at the position of his field shelter. Does it offer protection on 2 or 3 sides? Can you move it into a more sheltered corner? Can you add straw to make it more stable like?

I had a right wuss of a pony but I used straw bales to enclose her shelter more and put straw on the floor. This stopped her from climing under the electric fencing.

If you share the field this may not be possible, but the others may agree to you trying it if their horses are at risk of following yours over the gate or under the fence.
