I haven't seen him sit, but Zeus rubs his belly on the ground, and when he can find a snow drift to his liking, he lies on top of it and wriggles, think he's getting some kind of thrill out of it myself

My girl does that when she is rolling to change sides rather than rolling over! think it was from when she was fat and could not roll over that easily and now it is habit!

he also rubs his belly on the ground when led down, and eats when led down.
I dont think he has belly ache i think he is just pure lazy, he will sit there and have a look around before getting up.

LOL! My mare does that some times

She's rather large and a little bit stiff, so some times she pauses whilst getting up

Thats a great picture, my girl does not do this and I do not recall any of our others doing it either tbh, but I have seen quite a few pics on here and another forum of horses doing this, so yours is not alone

Thanks, I have had the pic as my screen saver at work and at first people didn't believe it was my horse

they found it quite funny that a horse would sit like a dog.

Yyyyeeesssss!!!!!!

My boy does this all the time have got a few pics, he was overweight when I got him and the 1st time he did it i thought he'd broke his leg and went running over 2 him. He does it to get over the other way with out to much effort.

I know a youngster that does this, he has sweetitch so was doing it to scratch! He used to shuffle around the field on his bottom waving his head about because it felt to good... we always felt so mean making him stand up but his tail was rapidly running out!

He is not alone in his ways then

I had never seen a horse sit like this before he did.
He has a lie down or a roll then sits like that before finally standing up.

Yep, Ginny does this - I wish she wouldn't!! I fenced the wood off so she couldn't scratch, I was rather chuffed with myself tbh because she couldn't scratch her mane & tail out. A few days later I found her doing this. I was not amused.

Ginny can now balance half way between rolling (so she is on her back upside down) and wiggle side to side to scratch the top of her bum. *rolls eyes*

I want! My horse doesn't do that but does a very strange pose in his stable whilst eating his hay...I call it his dandy pose, you know how dandy's used to stand with feet pointing out in opposite directions like they had to take their weight of their wig or something or maybe trying to adjust their funny pantaloons? (sorry I've had too much beer this evening and am dribbling on...). Well my pony does that with his back feet, makes me hoot.

Also makes my physio hoot as she says he's the only horse she knows who can't stand square and all his feet point off in different directions! That's my boy!

My mare does that too - but she sits on stuff....a tack box, a couple bales of shavings you name it. Back legs dangling off the ground - the whole lot.
