My mare had her flu and tet at 3pm today, all seemed fine and it is the same injection which she has had twice this year already with no problems. I went back to feed her at 6pm, rattled my keys (usually she winnies when she hears my keys as she knows its me) and she didnt winnie, walked up to the stable and she was just standing in the corner looking a bit quiet!! She has a swollen lump where the injection was administered, when you put the slightest (i mean litterally as much pressure as a fly would make) touch on any part of her neck the muscles start like flinching/tensing and she backs off, even when you go to touch her she backs off. I put her haylage on the floor and she tryed to stretch to get it but it must have been to painful so she pawed out at it and walked around her stable, came back and done the same. We picked it up and fed it to her so she was deffo hungry! She is reluctant to bend her neck to the right (because she would be therefore stretching the sore muscles). We took her for a walk and she was reluctant to go anywere and in general looked slow/stiff and reluctant to move, and again keeping her neck bend to the left. I rang the vet (she usually vacc my horse but someone else from the clinic done it this time round) and she said it sounds like a reaction to the vacc so to give bute for a few days, but if its worse in the morning then she will have to come out. Anyone else had experience with this?

Yes, my horse had a raging temp too.

She would eat her hard feed but not keen to eat haylage.
My vet said as long as she was drinking and therefore hydrated, she'd be fine.

She had hers on the Monday and she was back to normal by the Wednesday.

Hope she's feeling better in the morning.

My sister's horse has has a mild reaction to flu jabs before, made him lethargic and he'd come out in patchy sweating.

My old pony had a nasty reaction to penicillin though - it was quite worrying, he lay down flat out in the field for hours, wouldn't eat, showed colic-like symptoms and then just had muscle spasms all over. It was horrid, i thought he'd die. The vet said as long as he was drinking all we could do was keep an eye on him. Thankfully he was ok but i think if he had penicillin again he'd probably have a bad enough reaction it'd be fatal so no penicillin for him ever again!!!!

Yep, YO's pony reacted really badly one year (had previously had years of normal vacs!) so much so he couldn't stretch to the floor - all his water/food/hay had to be placed ontop of shaving bales

Quite a common thing, the horse will normally be fine in a few days, bute helps and nice hot towels. Mention this in future and ask the vet to give the flu and tet separately.

Hot towels, really? Our vet said to put a cold pack on:confused: Hmmmm!! Just back from checking on her (thats the good thing about being only 5mins from the yard :D ) and she seems a little more flexible in the neck, she was a bit hot to. And yes vet did say that she would have to get a different jab next time round :) Bloomin horses, although i do believe it is karma :p She through me off last week and i said " Your due a vacc next week ... feel the pain!" and unfortunatly that came true  Il keep my mouth zipped from now on lol

yes quite common, pop her water bucket up on something off the ground so she doesn't have to stretch down to it and hang her hay in a net. It should wear off in the next few days. If you get left with a lump then give your vet a call and get them to chat to the vaccine company. Same again if you end up with huge vet bills as some vaccine companies will cover some of the vet costs in this situation.
