Anyone else's horse still in a medium weight rug?

Pidge ISH despite being fully clipped is still in a mediumweight rug 200g and is like toast. At this rate he'll be lucky to get up to a 300g let alone a heavyweight 400g rug

So is anyone else's horse still in a lighter rug or not? Just being nosey

Mine is an ID, isn't clipped (fluffy but been rugged for a couple of months) but wasn't nearly warm enough in her 100g tonight. She's got a 40g on underneath that for tonight (I always think layering is warmer so I'd reckon it feels more like 150g) and s toasty. She won't have any more than 200g on this winter. If she were fully clipped she'd be in a 300/400g tonight!
 
Most of mine are in lightweights/200g still including my TB. None of them are clipped at the moment though (hopefully that will happen next weekend) as they are all coming back into work next week after a 4 month break. Once they are clipped, they'll go into 350/400g depending on how wimpy they are. The WB's I tend to rug heavily to stop them growing their coats back too quickly when they have been clipped.
 
both my wimpy tb and ageing welsh A are in heavy weights 350g.
On the days when it was mega sub zero she was in 450g.
Her winter coat is like some horses summer coat tho and she really feels the cold.
the wee fella had cancer last year so is wrapped up too.
 
A medium weight rug on a fully clipped horse does seem very 'minimalist!

All horses vary so maybe yours is a very warm one but can I ask how you judge that he is warm enough?
 
Mine is in a 150g at night and lightweight with no fill, turnout. Not clipped, but not like a teddy bear either. Hope to clip on mon and then will go in 200g with neck cover (chaser clip) or 350g on freezing night.
 
well the first winter I had him he was very underweight and spent most of it in 450g - 500g

However he is now fit and healthy and up to weight (not got an ounce of fat on him LOL) - probably about 570-580kg at the moment, and I know he's warm enough as he's either toasty under his rug when I put my hands under there, or I'll do the base of the ear test and check how warm he is there. It was -1 when I got him in tonight just after 5pm and he was so toasty I warmed my hands on his hindquarters

my girl is in a weatherbeeta landa m/w. she's a welsh D and has only been clipped on her throat, gullet, and tiny bit of her chest, but this has nearly grown back. She's toasty warm, i always put my hand underneath her rug and she's always lovely and warm.

Last winter she didn't have a rug on, but was like a hairy bear, and did get muddy! so took ages to clean her up every time I wanted to ride. Now, I just have to whip the rug off and get the mud off of her legs, and flick the brush over her body. She's a Dun, so it pays to keep her clean!
 
Dozzie is in a heavyweight. Trace clipped and due for another clip. She doesnt get a thick winter coat though.

She is such a woose. She would never have survived in the wild! Out 24/7 as I refuse to stable a native at night! She is very cute though! LOL!
Crispin-32 yr old, is in heavyweight, unclipped. He is a poor doer and VERY woosey! He does not do rain! He lives out 24/7
Tricks (30 yr old)- unclipped and no rug! Out 24/7. He will go into a medium weight soon. He is still looking like a broodmare and has a really thick coat so rugs make him itchy. Hence I leave him as long as poss.
 
Mine is in a 180g, she has a bib and belly clip and lives out 24/7. she is fine. A friends fully clipped horse is really warm in a 200g. He was a little too warm today in it.
 
Fair enough - can't say fairer than that! Although I think I would still put on more out of principle just to ease my concience!

Mine's a fully clipped TB in a medium weight, he is an incredibly hot horse and a marginally too cold horse is to my mind far better than a too hot horse - overheating them causes far more problems IMO. He's got a neck cover on tonight, but I actually don't own a heavyweight rug for him, he simply doesn't need it.
 
see I think more on the lines of Spotted Cat in that if he's too hot that's more likely to be worse than too cold. Trust me if he was cold I would go up to a 300g rug.
 
Oh I'm so mean - some of mine have NO RUGS ON AT ALL! My excuse is they are in a dutch barn so no wind, rain or hail, and not clipped (well, one is and he is wearing a rug). None are shivering either, but will be going down to check now X Factor is finished and might put a rug on...
 
Our elderly cob is clipped and in a light weight and really toasty. All the girls are unclipped and unrugged.
 
My cob was clipped yesterday so now he has a vest on underneath his MW to keep the draft out

Mine is in a lightweight no fill TO. I did actually buy a new rug today a 300g as I want to clip her as she has finally got wooly enough to start sweating.
 
Sec D x, not clipped at all and in a Rambo Duo with the original liner which I think was a 300g so inc the outer 400g...... he certainly isnt cold

At least he wont drop weight!!!
 
all my horses are rugged my:

minnie shetland has a mw/200g unclipped,
welsh secton a full clipped in450g combo,
16h3 idx fully clipped in under rug 100g and 450g combo as wimp,
16h2 cyldesdalexwarmblood in foal unclipped in 400g fal combo as she is the biggest wimp you will meet

they are all cosy but not to hot
