Anyone else's horse still in a medium weight rug?

My old girl is in a middleweight and out 24/7. She has pretty much out grown her clip, so I am waiting until I can re-clip her until I put her HW on. She is certainly not a horse that feels the cold. Even with a hunter clip, out 24/7 and in her 20s she only needs one rug when it's snowing. If I add a light under rug to that then she certainly feels hot.
 
Ours are in MW most of the time at the moment, although yesterday put them out in their LW rugs. We've only had one of them need a HW this year, and that was only for two days. Never had any of ours wear a HW for more than five days in any winter so far.

They each have trace or blanket clips.
 
mine is. TB with a fluffy coat. he is in a field and he has access to a stable 24/7 so i guess if he's really feeling it he will go in his stable. haven't brought a heavy weight for this reason. can always layer if need be. he always feels toasty at the mo - he's in a rhino med with neck cover.
 
My 3 year old broodmare is fully clipped (was done before I bought her!) and is in a combo 360 gram rug, living out 24/7 and is perfectly warm enough. Doubt she'll need anything thicker this winter.

I also have a weatherbeeta Taka combo 400 gram rug but it's so warm it's virtually useless - they end up being toasted inside!
 
well just thought I'd post to say it was -5 when I got to the yard this morning and Pidge was lovely and toasty in his mediumweight rug

It is interesting to see what other horses are wearing, and would like to point out that Pidge is warmer than sister's cob who has a hunter clip and is also in a mediumweight, these Irish horses must be made of tough stuff eh?

My TB mare has a high chase clip and is in a MW Rambo. She has always been a very warm horse so there has never been a need to whack layer upon layer of rugs on her. Lucky me huh?!

My Irish pony is fully clipped, and currently in a MWT full neck, and LWT stable rub and a MWT Wug...

he is normally very very warm, but this year he just doesnt seem to be staying as warm! So he has about 540g on at the mo....

Well technically one of mine is, but he does have a sherpa fleece with belly section underneath it!!

I was wondering when you are trying to evaluate how hot or cold they are, is shoving you hand under the rugs a good test?? Surely they'd only be cold under their rugs if something was very wrong!!

Base of the ears doesn't tell you how much energy they are using to keep warm either... Just musing over the best method!!
