Anyone else's horses 'full of it'?

Just wondered if any of your are finding your horses more difficult at the moment, is there something in the air?

Got chucked off my horse the other day so want to hear any stories of your horses playing up to make myself feel better before i go ride him after work!!

3 falls this week, 3rd one leaving me with 2 cracked ribs....

Deffo something in the air!

My older boy who is 20 this year and should know better is a handful on hacks at mo and pisses off at every opportunity and usually takes other horses with him, feel like I am constantly shouting sorry over my shoulder. He is so bloody strong when in that mood.
My new mare is trying hard to contain herself but ended up broncing and bouncing round school at weekend and almost planted me over fence, thank god for breastplates to hang on to.
Roll on spring or some drier weather so can turnout :)

Yes.

Usually she is good to lead. She went through a trying it on phase but has been good for the last 2 weeks. Sunday I got her in. As soon as her gate open she tried to run off! I wasn't letting go of her, so she bucked and then reared. I don't mean a small rear either :eek: Then she tried to run off again. Managed to keep hold of her, but I got covered in mud! then She pranced everywhere, then bucked and reared again, this time she clipped me on the back of the leg. Then she tried to drag me. Then she reared up again when we were on the yard. I was shocked that she had done it, she has never done anything like that before. She was fine to bring in yest.

Not naughty but different, in a good way. He's really energetic and raring to go. He's stopped his long and flat canter and is holding himself in a lovely bouncy showjumpery canter and has springs in his feet when it comes to jumps. I like him this way ;)

Oh, though it was just mine returning to her bad behaviour I thought had been resolved over the last couple of months!!
Glad i am not the only one, will double up on the Rescue Remedy and attempt to stay calm with the strutting/prancing and dragon snorting!!!

We have just moved ours to a new field full of grass. Three out of four have gone nutty! And the fourth is out of work so I haven't had the delight of discovering him being the same! The quiet, bombproof pony squealed and bronked in the woods when asked to trot. First time anyone has ever witnessed him do this under saddle! My laid back Arab took off at a gallop when asked to canter and when I tried to pulling him up he was leaping through the air! Very nearly came off! The third horse was lunged before riding and he was rearing, bucking, kicking out, bronking and stomping. Owner soon decided not to get on that day!

Why on earth are they all acting loopy?? My Mare had 3 days straight of acting like a numpty - especially when she hear another horse Whinny - you would think by the way she acted that we were off to the rodeo:eek:

Mine badly needs a gallop but obviously the going's too soft - she's always on her toes if she doesn't get serious speed work. At 19 she should know better but clearly doesn't thank goodness :D

So glad it's not just mine :)
My mare has been bonkers for a few weeks now - moving into a field full of grass, new field companions, less work over Christmas due to me being busy at work - it all contributes. At the moment I'm having to lunge for a few minutes before getting on, then sit a few circles of leapy canter before she'll work nicely. Once I've had 20 mins of work, she's safe to hack out... well, safer...

Amazingly for Jan I really think it's spring grass giving them all a little extra 'zoom'. Mine are definitely feeling the joys! I normally cut feed back in mid feb in preparation for spring grass - never had to cut it back this early!
Oh well looks like cold is back again at the weekend so it might calm the grass down for another month or too.

Totally agree . . . starting reducing with a view to cutting out the GreyDonkey's Speedibeet as he is quite well enough without it . . . our fields are bright green . . . and am I wrong but won't the frost on the grass just mean it's higher in fructans? On the other hand, it might retard the growth a little.

P

Mine has been a bit of a handful in hand which is not like him, doesn't want to stay in so I turn him out, doesn't want to go out so I go to walk him back in then he refuses, prances round like an idiot, dragging me around.. He's usually the most lovely docile animal..

After chasing 2 mini Shetlands around in the dark last night who are normally at the fence first as they know hay is waiting in the stable and then having to wait 30 mins whilst the others behaved like idiots I am starting to think their is something in the air!!! I clearly have got too complacent as I was only boasting the other day that they are all a joy to bring in and queue politely at the gate.Silly me....Had to email the neighbors to apologize for my foul mouth !!!

Smugly....I rode my 7 year old arab for the first time in 2 weeks at the weekend. At whilst he was a little bouncy...no more than usual...he was a total star. We encountered tethered ponies, the odd dumped mattress...trotted over a motorway footbridge over 6 lanes of traffic whilst a mum and daughter bicycled past us in the opposite direction, had a canter through the woods and came home.

All in a lozenge-jointed snaffle, no noseband.:p

lol my usually extremely quiet 4 year old was on his toes at the weekend and put in a couple of bucks on the way out of the yard.

i did put it down to 3 facts

1- that i havent been able to do much with him lately (been on him twice in last 8 weeks!) with the weather being so bad
2 - due to floods his turnout is only a small area!
and 3- he hadnt been out on the roads since september ( we have been boxing ours to the woods)

so was pretty pleased considering lol!

however...... this morning he freaked at the scary bale of haylage which has only been on the yard 3 DAYS and apparently not scary till today!, lol he did a runner and i had to retrieve the silly devil of the top of the muck heap! lol!
so must be something in the air :D

Yes, full of beans. Was lunging her the other day. Acting like a complete nut case. People in the school next to mine came over to watch. Thought it was amusing :o
First they asked if she was a stallion (understandable with all the snorting  )
Then they said she must be very young. Nope just thinks spring is here........ ;)

Yes! My normally ploddy cob has had a rocket up his arse since before Christmas! Not that I'm complaining mind you - it's nice that he's actually moving forwards for a change! :D

Thank goodness it's not just mine! Smirn has been on one for the past week or two

Hacked out at the weekend and bounced our way along the road, after walking past the wild ponies in the field at the end of the lane with just a bit of snorting on the way out, suddenly on the return journey Smirn decided it was necessary to go sideways, backwards and do what would have been a lovely piaffe if I'd actually asked for it when we met them again :D:D

There's also been a few sneaky bucks and a new game of 'I can't possibly stand still at the mounting block'....little horror....

Mine is full of himself also !! 15 going on 4 - retaining his manners - BUT very bright eyed, smiley & seems to think next "party" will be a run at the National
Nice though - that hes feeling so well :D

I dont have a horse at the moment but I was looking at the grass in my usually trashed field and if yours are out the grass is really sprouting some new shoots. I thought it looked like early spring and found my first snow drop yesterday open! So perhaps the warmer weather.(I am probably the only person in the UK with nice grass). I passed some horses today in a trashed field laying on their hay! No grass at all! One was out flat.

Mind you my old boy (RIP) loved freezing cold weather..due to being a woolley mamouth!

ohhh perhaps spring is sprung...mind you meant to get colder?

He has been for the last couple of weeks but is calming down now. We are ok at a walk/trot but fancy a full on speed race everytime we try for a canter. I thought once he had a blast he would settle but just wanted more!! Still at least the bucking and leaping has stopped - roll on more turnout:o

Be careful, be very, very careful what you say Hippona. ;)

You are not alone. My elderly, normally very gentlemanly ex-hunter has really had it on him for months. He and I had a real disagreement about who was the herd leader which lasted a few weeks (needless to say, I won the battle!) and he has recently decked 2 people and tried to deck a third - this is the animal formerly borrowed by nervous adults and children and who has taught several people to hunt and to ride, without putting a foot wrong!

As all things are equal in his care, health and feeding, I can only put it down to the weather. Can't be new grass as he isn't turned out (he is hacked out for a couple of hours or put on the walker for an hour ecery day every day).
