Took Java for a hack today,

we went all the way from the field down the road, through the village, past Ruth Edge's and to the bottom of the road at the crossroads.

I got to the crossroads ready to turn around to go back up again as it was going to rain, and two miniature shetland colts came running to their field gate,

Java suddenly decided to start spinning in the middle of a 60mph road (luckily no cars at the time!)

mum tried to hold him and then he did a lovely bronc ! he was spinning and trying to do something that resembled a canter pirouette, unnerved me a little bit at the time

i decided to turn him down the other road and go up the lonning so he didnt have to pass them!

Maybe he didnt know what they were!

Anyone elses's horses not like them????????

or is just mine who is as daft as a brush!

Yep we have a little bridleway called a the jasmine track near us and there is a field full of minatures at the bottom of it. To get into the track you have to walk over a wooden grid as it is which my horse hates but when the shetlands come over i have not a chance of getting him though!! He will only go through if I use the other horse I always hack out with that way to block the veiw of the shetlands and lead us through the grid.... the big fat wuss bag!! Now bearing in mind he is not bothered by anything normally bags, tractors, lorries, motorbikes, cows etc...... its pathetic :p!

haha same,

he is normally wonderful to hack, nothing bothers him really although he can be nosy but not naughty!

I havent taken him to a show yet, I hope he wont be silly then!

I'm not sure of miniatures, but we had to remove her from the shetlands fields as she picked them up by the manes and terrorised them.

She is terrifed of the donkey that's moved in next door though.

Mine just finds them fascinating, was petrified till he shared a field with one and he adored her, would let her hang off his neck and all sorts. :D

My old horse Hazel was really good out hacking on her own, one day we went past a field with a black miniature in it, I guess he looked strange as he had a big mane and forelock covering his eyes and ears. Any would have thought he was the Beast of Bodmin, she refused to go past and even span round in the road!

My show hunter was petrified of shetlands. If there was one working in the collecting ring I couldn't even get into it!

He once met 2 goats being driven in tandem at the Royal Welsh and I nearly ended up in Pembroke!

When I was on work experience they had mini shetlands in a paddock near to the entrance to the rest of the fields and so all the other horses had to walk past them to get to their fields. They were regarded with a high level of suspicion from most horses, even though they saw them every day!

Oh yes, one of ours is absolutely terrified of Shetlands. If he met a miniature I think he truly would think he was going to be eaten alive.

haha monkeybum13 :D

What I dont get is, he is stabled next to a shetland, and he kisses Milo and nuzzles him when he can (The field is halve with Java in one side and Charlie and Milo in the other)

Must just be a pet hate of some horses,

Charlie used to absolutely refuse to go past donkeys!

Yup, was at a riding club rally and there was a very hairy black Shetland grazing in the field next to the arena...my native cob cross who is pretty hairy and not exactly long legged himself was utterly terrified and messed about all down that end of the arena and refused to go past sensibly...I assumed it was because he couldn't see the Shetland's head as there was so much mane it was just like a large mobile but slowly moving black blob...

Oh god my old boy used to hate them with a passion he couldn't understand them I guess...I was stabled at a large equestrian centre where they held events all the time and I had to get my boy out in his field before the little mites came...otherwise he was a complete a*** to take out even with the chain over nose...he was like a stallion...and try to kick out....he never ever kicked out ever!....

loving everyone's stories!!!:D

im just glad no cars were coming at the time! it didnt help they were trying to run at him!

once he couldnt see them he was totally relaxed

Fany loves the Shetland on our yard, he is a mini x normal so a midi I guess? I think she loves him because she looks like a giant one herself.

Cappy is not so keen and when we were on our last yard he tried to pick them up when they went past his stable. However the one on our current yard is a bit of a s*d and is very dominant. Funniest thing I ever saw was this Shetland leading Cappy, all 17-3hh of him round by his head collar. :D

FDC

I do hope Java doesnt try to carry one round!!

He does have a habit of taking Milo's headcollar off for him.

Milo stands by Java's stable door and lets him take the headcollar off!

Yes! My usually brave 15hh working hunter who was scared of nothing almost had a canary when she saw a group of shetlands and miniatures tied up beside their horsebox at a show. We couldnt go anywhere near them or warm up in the ring near them.
When we brought home my sister's 10hh for the first time, she was horrified! Really wasn't keen on him for a good while, but she got over her little irrational fear eventually.

We have a highland youngster that is fascinated by the Shetlands on our yard. Maybe he thinks they are tiny versions of himself? :D

We used to have a horse on our yard who lived out with a shetland for a field companion, and they were inseperable, but when we tried to hack her past a field of unfamiliar shetlands she was terrified! Weirdo... :p

On one of our bridleways you have to hack past a field of minis and my boy was terrified of them! Yet fine with dogs bigger than the minis..

When I moved my mini Shets to a new yard a few years ago one of the other horses panicked and fell over when he first saw them :( :D

I have since found that most horses eventually accept them and become very attached, perhaps it brings out the broodmare in them?

hahahaha!! This thread has got me in stitches. My youngster gets completly overwhelmed by minitures and tried to go over a wall once to meet two

I used to ride a very green Sec C/D cross and whilst we were out hacking once he nearly had a heart attack when a black miniture was neighing at him He thought it was going to kill him, once we got past the field he kept spinning round to see where it had gone.....could not let it out of sight! I nearly fell off from laughing!!

Most bigger horses are frightened of the minis. Makes it very difficult when showing at open shows!!! I usually have to warn people when going past them, they look at me as if im stupid when i ask them to make room for my 32 inch stallion.... until their horses spot him, and their leaving the ring at 100mph!! :)

Never met a mini with my lad but he was absolutley bemused by the 12 hh ponies at some winter CRSJ we went to. I imagine he'd be horrified by minis LOL

Most of the horses on the yard are used to them by now!:)

The first time my Appy saw a Shetland, we were on a hack and it was being led down the road towards us. We ended up spinning round and cantering back the way we had came  but I quickly pulled him up and we jogged past! He has since been turned out with Shetland ponies (even having one as his best friend which he used to groom with!) so he is not scared of them now. Most horses tend to get a bit of a shock when they meet one for the first time. At my yard, we have recently had a new livery arrive which is a shetland pony. Most of the other liveries at the yard are WB's, TB's and other foreign breeds and you should see them when the shetland pony walks up the middle of the yard - they all have their eyes on stalks and run to the front of their stables snorting!

My lad is half terified of them, spotted some mini shetties out hacking so brought Al over to say hello, took for ever to get him near them, when I did he was shaking and squealing. But he also has a thing for foals, he gets all worked up when he sees them but would run a mile if one actually came near him:rolleyes:
