I'm beginning to panic... we've been "thawed" for 3 days now but still no water coming out! One of the taps does a bit of a rush for a few seconds when I turn it on which is encouraging but the one nearest the trough (typically) is dead as a dodo. I'm worrying now that there is a burst somewhere although my OH assures me that if that were the case, it would still trickle out of the tap. Anyone else still waiting for that magic reappearance?

I have had no water in the house since Xmas Eve so very fed up carting from neighbours 1/4mile away for myself and horses. I do have a long service pipe and although snow has gone the ground def still like concrete.

OP - I'd advise you turn off your mains water at night or if you're away from the house, coz then if somefing does happen you won't have so much of a disaster!

Sorry, I know this sounds obvious!, BUT so many people don't know where their mains stopcock is, and when you've got water piddling in like we did on Boxing Day morning, just over the electric mains/fuse box area, you need to know PDQ where to switch off the mains!

I did so, and what was a potential disaster was averted. OK we've lost power in the downstairs lights circuit, but everything else is OK. Have put a space heater in the hallway where the drips came down to dry it out, which has meant the ceiling hasn't collapsed (yet!).

The other thing I've found useful is a head-torch (plus plenty of spare batteries); absolutely brilliant.

Went in to B&Q on Boxing Day morning; was like a therapy group for survivors of Burst Pipe Abuse in there!!! - met a lovely lady who lives in a cob house (like mine) and was having problems - if that's you by any slim chance, have another hug from me whoever you are (and everyone else in N Ireland in particular as well, you poor people how the hell are you coping?).

Sorry, I omitted to say it was at my yard that it's still frozen, not home! And wonder of wonders... today it thawed, despite three days of fog and I now have a full trough again... phew!
