I'd love to build a menage but need to research rules and regs and also costs. Would love to hear some advice from anyone who has undertaken this on any scale or budget. I'm not necessarily needing a fenced area or even an area of precise dimensions - just somewhere to school on a surface that isn't the bog of my current field!

Many thanks

Its not me personally but my boyfriends yard had a new menage about 2 years ago.
They had their original sand arena converted to rubber and silica sand, with drainage.
Their menage cost £17,000, this was for the whole thing, but not including the base as they already had the sand from their old school.
Its a fab arena, and ive never even seen a puddle form on it no matter the weather. Rideable all the time, except for a couple of mornings when it was frozen over in the extreme of last winter, but was thawed after a few hours.
Expensive but worth every penny

I've not built a housework nope ;)

I've built a manège however and it cost about £6000 DIY. I used bark chippings rather than sand/rubber as you can get round planning that way :) It's also lovely when it is frosty as, unlike sand, it doesn't become rock hard :)

Our menage has a woodchip surface. Our chippings are delivered free by local gardeners. We rang a few and they bring them to us as it would cost them to dump them so by bringing them to us we have a constant supply so good 2 way deal.

thats interesting about the woodchippings. why's that then, do you know?

Because they are biodegradable it is classed as a temporary surface - bizarre really because it still has all the drainage and liners and what not ;)

The problem with wood chips is that they do biodegrade over time and will probably need a top up every 5 years or so.

I love the surface though to ride on - it's not heavy on their legs or, for that matter, yours when you are doing ground work ;)

The best thing is that it doesn't freeze solid in winter at all - provided you have good drainage of course...

I have to say that I hate woodchippings as a manege surface... they rot down, and are also incredibly slippy for canter work and jumping!
