My horse started with hives that covered his whole body about 2 weeks ago. Then he got laminitis. Vet has been out and as horse has suffered from auto immune keratitis in his eyes for a number of years we are thinking he may have cushings so have started him on Prascend. I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced hives with their cushings horses as I have heard of problems with scaly itchy skin before but not this.

yes. Mine suffered this for years gradually getting worse each year. By the time he was diagnosed they had covered a large part of his body. They started each year around beg Oct and continued until Apr/May when they went. He also had a rubbish immune system.
They improved considerably after he went on prascend and this year, after 12 m on prascend they are very very minimal so a considerable improvement.
Before he was diagnosed the only thing I could put them down to was worming with eqvalan duo in Sept each year. I have no idea if that had any relevance or if it was just coincidence. Alternatively if it was due to the wormer which, due to his poor immune system, he just couldn't deal with. (he didn't have a large worm burden)
He does much better without a rug even in the wet/cold/

Sorry cant help you with hives but would love to know more about
Auto immune keratitis. What were the symptoms how did you get it
diagnosed whats the treatment. Is it anything like cateracts that mine has
and i have to be carefull to avoid keratitis and am on antibiotics and drops
did not know horses could get it with chushings.can be quiet serious risk to sight.thankyou

Thanks Paddy555. It looks like hives can be a result of cushiness. He has got them all over his body and I feel rather sorry for him. It is odd because when we were trying to discover what might be causing it I changed his bedding from cardboard to oat straw and they completely cleared up for 2 days then came back. On the worming issue, he has had zero worm counts all summer and is only due to be wormed now for tapeworm, encysted red worm, bots which I won't do until he looks better. Did you treat the hives with anything? My vet said normally steroids are used to treat severe hives but obviously this is not an option with laminitis. He has only been on Prascend for a week but I am really hoping his hives will disappear.

Lizbet - My horses keratitis is a result of his immune system attacking his eye. It started with weeping only and I only got the vet to look at it as a second thought really. It has got gradually worse and is really sore when he has an attack now. I couldn't say if it was anything like your horse's problem as I have no first hand experience of cataracts.

Its as i thought important to keep on top of eyes. So many different things with chushings. Thanks for reply good luck.

my horse has been on Prascend for nearly 2 weeks and the hives have virtually gone so it does look like it is related to cushings.
