I doubt there'll be many takers after this tale. Make yourself comfy, it's a long one.

As you know, I'm off work after having recently had a huge piece of Meccano put in my forearm. I'd been feeling a bit yucky over the weekend but decided to keep my friend, Helen, company yesterday when she went to pick up her broodmare from Lancashire. I mean, how difficult can it be to sit in the passenger seat, enjoy the scenery etc etc?

We arrived at Helen's auntie and uncle's farm where Hattie had been running with their 4yo stallion, after being reluctant to oblige by AI to Jaguar Mail and much preferring the natural method with her cute but unknown Zangersheide boy. After a quick bit of lunch we changed the dressing on my arm, upon which Helen said "Ewww, that's gross, I can deal with horses but I'm rubbish with people's injuries". Little did we know how prophetic that was to be.

Hattie walked into the trailer, no partition in as she's 5 months in foal and huge already, and off we set. We were trugging along the M66 at about 45/50mph, not much traffic, clear day, no wind, nothing untoward at all. H and I were chatting away and putting the world to rights when BANG

, there was a sound like a bomb going off. My first thought was a blowout but it was so much louder than that, and we were shunted forward in our seats. H struggled to keep control of the truck and trailer and then the trailer flipped onto its side, detached itself from the truck and it felt like we were about to roll too. H managed to stabilise the truck and stop by the crash barrier on the hard shoulder and we lept out to see the carnage of trailer behind us as we sprinted back to it, me on my phone dialling 999 as I ran. I didn't even register the VW Golf with an older couple in that was smashed into the crash barrier, bizarre that. You can imagine the thoughts going through our heads and I feel quite sick and emotional just thinking about it now.

Unbelieveably Hattie was out of the trailer and trotting slowly towards the oncoming traffic. Thankfully a van driver and lorry driver stopped and blocked the traffic as H reached Hattie. As she turned her towards me all I could see was her mouth open and lots of blood. Helen was hysterical and it was obvious the mare had broken her jaw. I took her off her and she stood calm as anything while I tried to comfort H as we waited for the police. Hattie had gone into shock and was shaking; we needed a vet so badly and it seemed like we were stood there for hours. We were just by a bridge over the motorway and a gaggle of kids and adults ghoulishly gathered there, until a few choice words from H and I moved them on.

I spotted a trailer in the traffic queue behind us so a policemen went to see them and they kindly agreed to let us put Hattie in with their pony to get us off the motorway, as there was still no sign of the vet or horse transporter. The bleeding had slowed to a drip and bless her, Hattie whinnied to the pony and walked straight in. We got off the motorway and pulled into a garage - god knows what they thought as there was us in the truck, the other truck and trailer, police car, horse transporter and the vet, then H's uncle turned up too. The vet assessed Hattie and thought he could wire her jaw so the very, very kind people then drove her to the horse transporter's yard (rather than take her out of the trailer and put her in the lorry) where we put her in a stable and the vet set to work. Poor guy, I have a feeling he was a small animal vet but he did a sterling job of wiring it up: the upper and lower jaw was broken but she only lost two lower teeth and split one front upper one. She stood like a lamb again, and when it was all done and the dope was wearing off she started picking at some hay. H and I were wrecks by this time and had a very odd and pensive journey home.

She's being brought back today and Helen's vet will take over, and scan her - so if you could spare some vibes for a live and healthy foetus please, and for a very brave mare who deserves to recover fully and have a healthy foal.

Coffee and muffins if you've got this far, although I still feel a bit queasy tbh. Massive thanks to the lovely guy, Geoff, and his stepdaughter who rescued Hattie in their trailer, and everyone else who helped - my faith in human nature is well and truly restored.

OMG! What a terrible thing to happen. Poor you..poor everyone!!!

frown.gif
I am so pleased you and Helen are unharmed, and fingers tightly crossed for Hattie. HUGE hugs to you all. xxx

Bloody hell Mrs - there was me feeling all sorry for myself today (for no reason) - and you've just put it all into perspective.

Very much hope Hattie and baby are OK, and that you and Helen are recovering from the shock.

How were the couple in the VW - and what on earth happened?

Sounds horrendous. Think I'll stick to my boring days in the office thanks! So did something hit the trailer?
confused.gif
Didn't quite get that.

Everything cross foal is OK & speedy recovery for her jaw.

My blood just ran cold on reading that. What a brave, clever mare - all fingers crossed the trauma will not have affected the foal-let, she deserves a happy healthy mummyhood. High fives for Geoff and stepdaughter too - what legends. And I hope you and Helen are okay....

Sounds very scary
frown.gif
but it seems like Hattie behaved like a saint considering the situations, thank god she was stopped easily and that the kind people were happy for her to go on the trailer... Fingers crossed very tightly that she and foetus are ok! Hope you're arms healing well too
smile.gif

Dear lord Baydale - that is absolutely unbelievable. Thanks goodness you are all ok. I do hope Hattie & her foal are going to be alright.

What actually happened? Did something run into the back of the trailer?

Yuk, how absolutely horrid. Poor all of you x

Oh my word N, that is truly truly horrific. I am so glad someone nice was there to help out in your hour of need, huge vibes for brave Helen and poor little Hattie and a big hug and a stiff drink for you. Glad you're not hurt yourself xxx

holy crap.. what a nightmare of a day..
frown.gif
massive vibes for Hattie and her baby.. not surprised you feel queasy, it doesn't bear thinking what could have happened - but it didn't - thank god no one was seriously injured.

Remind me not to go for a queit day out with you! Sounds like you were relatively lucky, will keep my fingers crossed that the scan is ok. Thank God with your friend imagine trying to cope on your own.

Oh my god, the poor mare, jeez, what a nightmare day. so glad to hear that she's okay and that the vet did such a good job.
did the old couple run into the back of the trailer then? sounds terrifying.
fingers crossed that she holds onto her blob, and makes a full recovery.

Holy hell, what a nightmare. Fingers crossed for the scan, thank god you were ok and that the people on hand could do such a sterling job of helping.

OMG what on earth caused the 'bang' which caused the crash!?!

whatever caused it lots and lots of healing vibes to hattie, what a brave mare she is

Also hugs to you and Helen and no you can keep your 'quiet' days for yourself as think I would keel over in shock!

Having had a similar thing happen with my mare in a truck I know exactly how sick you must feel.
Horrid horrid thing to happen, I really hope sweet Hattie continues to improve and that she's still in foal.
Sending her gentle vibes.

As for you... (((hugs))) what a horrid shock for you and Helen.

Best you stay inside today, by the fire with vino.

xx

Totally agree deskbound - i feel all shivery just reading that
frown.gif
. i am so glad you are all ok and big big fingers crossed for the very very brave mare.

Big high fives for Geoff and his step-daughter and their pony!

Thoughts with you all.

Wow. Count your lucky stars - how truely terrifying, I hope the mare recovers fully. Its amazing how everyone reacts when the adrenaline and fear and shock starts pumping. Minutes feel like hours but thank god you are all ok. stock up on the rescue remedy - failing that - BRANDY! xxx

Oh my god, that sounds horrendous!! Everyones worst nightmare, hope the mare goes on ok and makes a full recovery, you both must have been besides yourself with worry.

christ! what a freaky run of bad luck you are having I sincerely hope that is the end of it and the good luck can now begin to flow. What happened then did the VW crash into the side of you and tip you over?... Poor mare and no wonder you and your friend were shaken by it it sounds like a horrid ordeal, but thank god you went with her think how the poor love would have felt all alone
frown.gif
doesn't it make you feel all warm inside though when people pull through for you the trailer guy who let you share it, what a saint
smile.gif

I feel sick just reading about it so I can only imagine how you and your friend were feeling! Terrifying.

So pleased you are both ok, and it sounds as though Hattie will recover. Sending vibes for a speedy recovery and a healthy foalie next year.

Well done to all who helped!

How horrible. Thank god the Mare seems to be OK - and I hope the foal is too.

I just cannot read any more of these stories, or else I want to sell my trailer!
x

Gosh I had a lump in my throat reading that, what a horrible day.
It always suprises me how kind people can be in an emergency especially horse folk.
Did you find out why the accident happened?
Hope the mare is scanned ok.

Thanks everyone, I'll let you know how Hattie and baby Hattie are later. Helly's ploughing through stuff with the insurance company as we speak, what a nightmare that must be.

We think the couple in the VW must have hit us from behind, as we were shoved forwards so violently. They were both fine, not a scratch, and he was remarkably composed when I spoke to him, didn't seem to be at all shocked compared with H and I I'm hoping the police board asking for witnessses comes up with something as the van driver who was so helpful said all he saw was the debris, so he must have been a fair way behind us.

The thing is, Helly and I often do stuff on our own - as I'm sure many of us staunchly independent women do
wink.gif
- but I'm a firm believer that when your number's up, that's it, not a lot you can do about it. And if sh1t happens, you just get on with it, whether you're on your own or not. However, I may well have said a big thank-you prayer to him upstairs when I went to bed last night, and asked him for anything he had to spare for Hattie too.

I totally understand if you all wish to make me a social leper from now on.
