Anyone feed Allen & Page Hacking Mix? Or add *lots* of water to feed?!

I just bought a sack a Allen & Page Hacking mix and on the instuctions of feeding it tells you to feed:
-1 x scoop of the mix
-1 x scoop of water
-1 x scoop of chaff

I just wanted to know do I have to add so much water? She is fed sugarbeet anyway (so feed will not be dry) but I was just concerned that they are saying to add that amount of water in case the mix swells more then other mixes and if I were to not add that amount it would possibly cause colic?! (I am thinking of unsoaked sugarbeet here!)

I hope that makes sense, probably a very numpty question but any thoughts appreciated.

Thank you

ive always wondered how much water to add to feeds too and whether you can feed dry - everyone always debates about it at the yard so am interested in the responses....

I think it is just to aid swallowing - ie so the horse does not choke. I think if you are feeding fairly wet sugarbeet anyway you will not need to add any additional water.

We have fed Allen & Page feeds for ages and it is onlt recently we actuially realised they suggest you add water! We literally just add enough to dampen the feed really and our horses are fine on it. Although we are not feeding them a lot at present (just enough to add supplements for some of them) and in winter we feed it along with sugarbeet aswell.

It is good practice to dampen feeds and add a small amout of cod liver oil to assist the food in it's passage along the diggestive tract.

I always add lots of water, partly because I was always taught to (I'm old-fashioned over some things) & partly because it convinces my fatties they're getting a proper sized feed!
