Anyone feed CSJ Champ - what do you think

Hi All, I'm currently looking at Millie's diet - she was previously on DUCK - but it became a real faff to get hold off, and my tiny freezer compartment meant i was limited on how much i could order in one go. she's currently on Arden Grange 'Mini' - which she seems to like, but i was talking to someone the other day who mentioned CSJ Champ - having looked on the website (link below), the ingredients look ok, as do the protein levels etc. but it also seems very cheap... which if its a good food then great - i was just wondering if anyone had any experience of it? £10 (isk) for 15kilos would be a massive cost saving for me (considering AG is £8 for 2k) - i'm not neccessarily looking to change Millie's feed, and am happy to pay for the AG - its hardly breaking the bank - but if this stuff is any good i'd seriously consider it!

Comparing it with Arden Grange there isn't actually a huge amount of difference between the two, especially when you consider the difference in cost!

I would split the difference and consider Skinner's something-and-rice, eliminates the maize, wheat and chicken fat which are in both of the feeds you mention and it's about £22 per 15kg.
 
I'd been told it was great stuff so got a sample for my own dogs and the rescues. Out of my own 6 only 2 of them would eat it which is VERY unusual so I didn't bother getting anymore. Ask for a sample first. ;)

Thanks BlackCob, i've just had a look at the Skinners website - it does look as though they do include chicken fat in their feeds, and maize in some too (looking at chicken & rice and lamb & rice), however i'll definitely consider it, is it easy to get hold of? (i'm in leicestershire and i dont think i've seen it stocked in local feed shops/pet shops).

I've sent of an enquiry to CSJ - and asked what they think would be best along with a request for samples (she has been known to be picky in the past and point blank refused to eat JWB or Burns) so dont want to buy the big bag to find she doesnt like it, I'll do the same with Skinners too. I'll happily stick with AG as she seems to enjoy it, the kibble is small which suits her little mouth - dont laugh - it was painful watching her eat any 'larger' kibble (even though it wasnt that big!!)

The field and trial versions (salmon, duck and turkey with rice) don't have any additional nasties and have the benefit of being VAT free. :)

No idea why the 'pet' versions have all the extra grains in, seems daft! It's stocked in most 'country' stores, Countrywide, Mole Valley Farmers type places.
 
Hi

for whatever reason i cant get on the Skinners website now - is the Field & Trial aimed at working dogs? Millie is a JRT and not anywhere near a 'working dog' (a JRT scared of rats and has no interest in chasing small furries! useless! especially with the big bugger rats we have at the yard at the moment!) - would that mean the Field and Trial wouldnt be suitable?
 
We fed the CP21 which is the CSJ Salmon kibble for about a year after recommendation from a friend. Our dogs loved it and did very well on it, much better than any other kibble we have used in years. BUT then all of a sudden the kibble quality changed, it had noticeable large grainy maize bits in it, like raw cornmeal and the dogs went off it, so did their stomachs! In fact we got several instances where the kibble passed through them and came out almost still as complete bits of kibble. Maybe they have rectified that, I did contact them about it but they never got back to us. The other thing I did not like was that there was no agent close so we had to mail order and their shipping is very expensive, with no break for ordering large amounts, even 10 bags at a time.

Echo those who recommend Skinners, as a quality British made food, grain free. And also Fish4dogs - excellent, we use this now.

Yes, this - Fish4Dogs is always my first reccomendation for a complete dry food, then Skinners as the budget option. :)

The working dog distinction means nothing, by the way, people tend to panic over protein levels and so on but as long as you feed an appropriate amount it's the same as any other. :)
 
CSJ Champ was recommended to me by the shop where I get my dog food. I have five to feed - a Collie cross, a GSD with a sensitive tum, and three Staffies. All have been on it for a year now and doing fine. All eat it, sometimes my Collie x is fussy but he has it soaked in water with a supplement. With 5 to feed the price is important to me, and you can't get food of this quality this cheap anywhere else. My GSD's tummy is OK on it, too, which is a first!
 
I tried CSJ with my lot, and don't really rate it.
I generally feed raw, but changed to complete over the winter for ease and as they were not competing thought a maintenance complete feed would be just as good. However, 1 wouldn't eat it and 2 lost weight on it (and that is a surprise as they can normally live off almost fresh air when feeding them raw!!!). It also smelt really horrible.
A friend of mine stopped using it as she said it made her house smell like wee!! lol

I have returned to half raw at the moment but using Skinners F+T as well - and really rate this. I have moved my 7 month old collie pup on the 'Crunchy' and for teh first time she is actually putting a bit of weight on and has a healthy covering over her ribs (she has was on Omnipro or JWB before).

I also think Fuish 4 dogs is very good - but more pricey.
