Ok so I own a 14.2 cob , very good doer.
She has a bit of Hi Fi lite when she comes in at night time to put her supplements in.
At the moment she has:
- NAF general purpose supplement (no real reason apart from it makes me think shes getting all the 'vitamins and minerals' she needs)

Protexin gut balancer (because she had a sensitive tummy after switching yards so just kept her on it)

However, soon Im going to want to start her on her agnus castus because she can be a right madam during spring and summer.

Also she is barefoot and I feel like she should be having something to help with this - shes been barefoot for 2 months now though and feet are fine.

In reality she needs NO feed whatsoever - she has hay overnight and 12 hours turnout.
I feel like Im giving her it just to mix all these bloomin supplements in!!!

Anyone else feel like this?!!!
Trouble is with so much advertising etc these days you can easily get fooled into thinking they need this, that and the other I suppose :)

My friends horses have around 8 or 9 different powders/liquids added each feed, not surprised one of them is not a big fan of his feed.

asbo - This is what I dont want to happen! I already feel sorry for her, im having to put more Hi fi in to disguise the powder :(

Think Im going to just do the agnus castus and gut balancer from now on, general purpose has just ran out and tbh I dont want to replace it :)

If you are happy with NAF products then you could use Pink Powder instead of the General Purpose and Protexin as it contains pre/probiotics.

You could also look to making/buying your own supplement - Brewers Yeast is the main component of a lot of pre/probiotics, or something like Prohoof :)

I am the same - it takes me ages to make up their feeds to give them all their supplements and costs me a fortune. Mine are all getting on a bit and as they get older seem to need more supps or maybe I am just easily persuaded they do by all the different supps available!

^^Me too. Seems to be getting worse as he gets older. Now more additives than feed, but daren't take anything out "just in case" not that he is ever going to get fussy about what goes in his mouth thankfully! Currently on 3 oils, yesac, cortaflex, garlic, limestone powder, Kevin bacon hoof pellets and red cell off and on. Not added up the cost just don't want to know...

Have you tried mixing them in fast fibre it absorbs all the powder supplements and they dont need alot!
My cob only has 250g dry weight and mixed in she has copper, zinc, biotin, joint supplement and linseed. It all mixes in well and she loves it...

:DDefinately, we have a 16 hand 16yr ol welsh x tb. He has a decent sized feed but has a joint supplement, red cell, approx 8 carrots sliced and enough mint to take the taste away. If i don't get the balance right i may as well throw the whole feed in the bin. We also have a 12.2 8yr ol welsh b mare. Gets fat on concrete. She gets a small handful of chaff, 3 slices of carrot, global herbs calmer, oestrass and a little bit of the joint supplement and of course the mint aswell. I wouldn't give her a feed at all but for the supplements. Once hers is mixed its about small enough to fit on the wooden spoon. Making feed and slicing carrots takes almostr as long as putting beds down!!!!! (mind you if i'm honest i quite like it!)x

my mare isn't very well at the moment but even before that I was thinking she was getting more powder than a cocaine addict ! sloppy speedi beat helps and mine would eat that on its own rather than Hifi and its only fiber really or fast fiber as suggested

This morning my mare had

handfull of Hifi Mol free + half a scoop sloppy speedi beat
Whole sachet of anti biotics
half a danillon
half scoop MaxaFlex
full scoop maxivita vits and mins

I would like to have her on linseed magnisium and apple cider vinager too but thats just getting stupid ! She is also looking festively plump after a month or so of box rest and adlib hay !!

owners of poor doers eat ya heart out :D

This is what my hairy Dales gets. No hay, living out 24/7, not rugged, natural shelter only. She has gained weight this winter. Although barely been ridden since Nov which hasn't helped her waistline.

She has 100g fast fibre (A+P told me to give her 1kg )
naf general supp for vits
brewers yeast for sweetitch
Magnesium for feet.

my mare has a very sensitive stomach too, she was on NAF PP for a while but I recently changed to brewers yeast which is doing a great job! that's the only supplement she gets, she's not a good doer so gets the other vits and minerals she needs from the rest of her diet and forage

It was for exactly that reason I went to balancer as had everything in it (plus a bit more) that I was adding separately but in one palatable go but if you pick up another tread about balancers you could be put off that idea!

All I know is all four of mine look well and apart from the old one having cushings are fit and healthy so I cant be going too wrong :D

They have the appropriate Dengie product - either Hi-fi lite or alfa a oil
speedi-beat
the appropriate Bluechip - either Pro or Lami-lite
and when their in home grown hay

Oh and I do have two of them on extra magnesium from feedmark essentials range.

I feed a combination of Brewers, linseed meal, turmeric, Pro Hoof within a base of Fast Fibre or Vet Vitality with just a smidgon of chaff. So the feed does look a bit powdery before it's soaked!.

But, i guess that if you were to grind up and seperate all the ingrediants in an average pony nut or balancer, it would look quite powdery too?. It is convenient to feed compound feeds though ,and takes less time to make up feeds!.

But on the other hand, it's nice to just add what you want in isnt it!?

For years I have mixed her sups in with a bit of chaff however at YHL in Nov I got a sample of fast fibre. Because it's like porridge when it is soaked it's so much easier to mix the sups in.
I probably spend less a year on horse feed than some people spend in a month! I have used almost 9 bales of hay (small bales) since August. If she didn't spend time in the stable while I have a cuppa or 3 when we get back from a hack she wouldn't even have used that!
