Hi - - friend and I would like to take the horses to the Malvern hills for a day ride. One horse is young and in experienced so nothing too long and challenging! Just wondering if anyone knows of a good place to ride from (or any pubs we could ride from?) or any other tips?

Try putting this on the regional board. You night get a better response.

I used to live near Malvern and I remember that there are by-laws preventing people un boxing on the land run by the Malvern Hills Conservators as local point to point trainers used to use the commons as gallops.

I live near Castlemorton common which is ideal for getting up onto the Malverns. If you come through Welland there's an area just on the right where you can park and start your ride. You could also go to the car park on the road to Eastnor but it's quite open there and you may want to take the edge of the young horse before you hit wide open spaces. I'm not aware of any reasons you can't park on the common, I've done it loads of times. There is a yard on the common, Marlbrook, if you contacted the owners Ian and Liz Coles they might let you use their parking which would be more secure. Great riding and you can do a mix of tracks and quiet lanes but I'd get a good map.

As far as I am aware, and I dog walk on the Malverns a good deal, there are no horse friendly pubs, in fact all the pubs I know are beside the Malverns on fairly busy roads. I will check, however, for you. There is a very nice licenced cafe called "The Kettle Sings" where you could stop on horseback. It has stunning views but I've never ridden there. Let me ask for info on my riding club site as others may know of something.

That's really kind - thank you!!

The Kettle Sings has been shut over the winter, so check when it re-opens. It may be around now, but have a look on their website.

There is plenty of good riding on and around Malvern, there are bridleways along the full length, from the Eastnor/Hollybush end up to the Beacon and North Hill. There is a gap in the bridleways around the British Camp A449 area, but it just involves a short road section on the relatively quiet B4232 up the side of the hotel to bridge it.

Most of the main tracks on the hills are bridleways especially over the Jubilee, Beacon and North Hills areas.

Have a look at the area on Bing maps, as that can be set to show small scale Ordnance Survey views, which give a clear indication of the multitude of routes.

Thanks for your help - sounds like it should be quite straightforward so long as we have a map. Are there a lot of reasonably safe places to park and unload?

Following posted by members of my riding club:

I often "pub ride " on the hills. I park at Castlemorton and ride up to British camp, then head over to The Malvern Hills hotel and then head back down via the Plume of Feathers at Welland for cheesy chips and more cider. You can then go to the farmers arms at Birtsmorton and loop back to Castlemorton" Plume of feathers is closed I'm afraid....the Robin Hood is open though,

With reference to my above post, this excerpt is what I was referring to

"Horse Training

No person shall race, break-in or train or cause to be raced, broken in or trained any horse on the Hills except in such places as may from time to time be set apart by the Conservators by means of notices exhibited on the Hills. (Section 16, 17 & 18 of 1995 Act)

Where the Conservators have by notice or sign restricted or prohibited the riding of horses over any part of the Hills or given to the owners of horses let to members of the public for hire or reward directions as to the paths or tracks to be used on the Hills no person shall without reasonable excuse ride a horse over that part affected by such notice or on any path or track on the Hills in contravention of such prohibition restriction or direction."

This is the link to the Conservators website http://www.malvernhills.org.uk/manage/byelaw.aspx
They have a list of car parks, charges and maps etc on the website, which might be helpful.
