Hi all!

Tried my normally amazingly reliable lorry earlier and she didnt start, it sounded like the battery was flat ( the battery is never flat and it always starts 1st time) I only used it last week (and drove for around 2hrs) and she was fine.
When i looked at the battery there is LOADS of whiteish stuff around the positive terminal.

Is this the problem?

What do i do??!

Thanks SP

Best to do is find someone with a charger and charge over night Prob bit late now though. You could get someone with heavy duty jump leads to meet you tomorrow and try jump starting it. You may just need to replace the battery. Does yoour lorry insurance include breakdown??

stinki pinki that white powder stuff is just battery acid or sometimes corrosion. it isnt really anything to worry about unless its pouring out! but if its just a bit of powder its nothin to worry about. lots of batterys get this.

when you turn the key do the dash board lights light up?

is it a diesel?

First, try jump starting it - if that doesn't work, and it's a diesel, you could try giving the starter motor a good tap - it may be on the way out. Best to look in your handbook/google the name/model to try to find out where the starter motor is! It's usually a sort of cylindery metally thing (helpful I know

Yes its a diesel, a really old merc, but it literally ALWAYS starts 1st time. The lights on the dash are lighting up , but not as bright as usual...

Will try jump starting her tom, cant belive it horse is going so well too!

Thanks Bex, will try, at least the comp is local and my test isnt untill 4pm so ive got lots of time to get it going!!
I do have breakdown cover, but not sure at the mo if they will come out to my home..

Mine started doing this and turns out the battery was empty of water...

poor lorry!! I jump started mine until I could fill it up and get it charged again.... certainly not ideal though!!!!

Ok..will try all suggestions, thanks everyone. mite be a good excuse not to have to plait, if i say the lorry wouldnt start! LOL!

The white stuff around the terminals can be removed by pouring some boiling water over it. Then once cleaned smear some vaseline over the terminals & it shouldn't happen again.

The water in the battery has to be de-ionised water, which is either distilled water or you can use water that has been defrosted from the fridge with the same result.

The fact that your dashboard lights aren't as bright as usual says that it is highly likely that one of your batterys has thrown the towel in. I had similar circumstances happen with me. They go suddenly, alright one day & knackered the next. Really you could do with putting a metre on each of them to see which one has gone. It needs both batterys to be in good order for it to have enough charge to fire the lorry up. I tried charging mine up but it wouldn't hold sufficient charge so I had to replace the battery. The other one had been replaced a few months earlier.

Once the battery was replaced my lorry fired up first time. They aren't cheap though, but you'll probably need a new one.
