Anyone got a beagle?

OH and I have been thikning about getting a dog (or two!)

We are out for a lot of day but the dog would have a warm garage with access to the garden all day - it would obviously be walked in the morning and evening and be in at night.

So alot of people have mentioned beagles to us (we live in a semi).

Just wondered what people's experiences of them are?
 
not good unfortunately. my friend has one and is currently filming for bbc's dog borstal with her!
great dogs if you are looking for something with LOTS of energy, but be aware they have a tendancy to show their dominance even to their owners, a strong minded breed in short!
 
My family had one when I was a teenager, it was a very sweet natured dog but needed a lot of exercise, which he got but would escape and run away regularly. The garden was surrounded by a 5' stone wall with an extra 18" of wire on top and he could still jump out when the fancy took him.

So no I don't think that would be the best breed for you.
 
I have heard that they can have a tendency to get fat (cos they actually need loads of exercise) and can 'follow their nose' a bit... so might not nescessarily come back when called - Ie. need to be well trained.

Depends what sort of dog you want... on the up side they are meant to be lovely

They are a nightmare.
Spent most of the time getting in the car and driving the streets in search of mine even though they lived in fort knox.
Suggest a retired greyhound will not mind being left to sleep all day... used to being kenneled .... and they are quiet so wont howl UNLIKE a bleegal!! :-)
 
Not owned one personally but heard they are hard work. Bumped into a friend who has a beagle recently, and he has to spend a lot of time walking him on a lead, otherwise as soon as he picks up a scent he's off and won't be seen for hours!
 
I have two beagles (Poppy and Hannah) and I think they are the best pet dogs you could get!

They are very affectionate, have excellent characters and are great with kids and cats. they are very easy to look after and have no major health issues. They are long lived but, like any dog, you need to keep an eye on their waist line! My girls seem to live on fresh air.
Like any breed they have 'requirements', my girls are quite happy on the couch all day if they've had a 20-30min walk but will happily be out on a 4 hour hike as well. They are walked off the lead most of the time, hannah is only on a lead near roads - I've only lost Poppy once for 20 minutes which I'm told is very good going for a beagle

They don't like to be alone but are quite happy with each other for company, I don't particularly like keeping dogs individually anyway. You have to beagle proof your house a bit, a cage is essential to keep an naughty beagle puppy safe when unsupervised and NO food is safe unattended - you soon learn not to leave your dinner on the table when you've lost it a couple of times.
