Has anyone used/bought rugs from MudRugs? They do a 20g fill and am wondering if it’s very waterproof and how robust they are? I just want to keep one dry nothing else! Thanks 😊

Just had a look. What stops all the crud getting under the belly flap? I would bet it would manage it somehow.

Yes I have and I’ve just ordered another one today.

They are fab rugs, top quality. Very waterproof and tough.
They fit very well and I would highly recommend them.

You don’t need to use the belly guard if you don’t like it - I find it a bit off a faff but my mother uses it on her horse, from time to time.

I bought two a couple of years ago. They have lasted well and stood up to a lot of mud!! Both of mine have attached necks which isn’t always the best and didnt work with the chunky ponies but swooped onto a thinner pony it kept her snug over the winter and has been washed and re proofed professionally and looks as good as new.

ooh I very much like the idea of a 20g rug specifically designed to keep mud monsters clean....if I get a bonus this year I might try to buy one then. The saddle pads look nice too.

thanks everyone for your thoughts. I bought a Weatherbeeta but it’s nowhere near the quality they used to be - the edges curled up and fabric is very poor. So I am looking elsewhere and like the idea of small companies! I’m not worried about belly covers. Just something to keep a NF dry in the depths of winter!! For now he’s out naked…..

I've got the 50g and 20g (I liked the 50g so much I emailed them asking if they had a lighter one planned, and then bought the 20g the moment it came out lol). Yet to have a leak, and they're pretty tough. Only meh would be that the reflective panel in the shoulder gusset rips out easily if there's brambles involved, but it's purely cosmetic so that didn't bother me much.
They come with both the belly cover and surcingle straps, so you can choose.
If it's totally sloppy, knee deep slip and slide mud, then I'd opt for the surcingle's as yes, mud can and does get into the belly cover when it's like that. But otherwise it does a good job of keeping tummies a bit cleaner, dryer and warmer.
I like the 20g especially, it doesn't get moist or gross inside like a rainsheet can, but without being too warm for those that just need protection from the wet but not so much the cold.

I have a 20g, 50g, 100g, 200g and 300g. Sadly, the 50g leaked (I did contact MudRugs and they were helpful and gave me a small refund to go towards reproofing), and now my 20g and 100g both leak (not even heavy rain). Very disappointed and will not buy these rugs again. I have bought a new 50g and 100g via eBay for a lot less money. I was a huge fan of MudRugs when I bought them only a year ago as they fitted well (the 20g has a huge neck for some reason, the other necks were in proportion) and stayed in place. They look great too and everyone at the yard said how lovely they are, so you can understand how upset I am, 3 of them leak. Not used the 200g and 300g much at all as not been cold enough (thank goodness). Sadly, I cannot recommend MudRug.

Thanks for your reply. That’s a similar experience I had with a Swish rug, leaked from beginning and despite proofing it’s never really been any good. So was nervous about buying another smaller brand. This has firmed up my decision to go the Horseware Wug route. Sometimes you just have to go by the “Spend more save more” rule, which I think applies to horse rug! Sad because I like to support smaller brands.

I had a 150g mud rug lovely fit, belly cover very useful with the winter we've just had, unfortunately it leaked in heavy rain, was fine with showers etc but my horse was pretty soaked underneath after a whole night of heavy rain.
I emailed the company who were very helpful and refunded.
I haven’t had an issue with swish rugs, i have a small collection of those 🫣.

I have the 20g and another livery has the 50g - neither of us has had problems with leaking and both our horses live out 24/7 (including over this last awful winter). It sounds like perhaps their proofing process is a bit hit and miss. I like the huge neck - it means no mane rubs - and the belly cover and generous tail flap keep the hippo clean.

I was going to suggest Swish. Its funny isn't it, I really rate Swish and with the prices of Horseware it's now probably the route I'd go down if i wanted new. I have a similar problem with a ruggles rug, everyone else really rated them so I bought one which leaked really badly from the get go.
