Anyone got a solution to all this mud!!

I've got approx 120m2 of yard that is mud. I've looked at these grass mats that reinforce the ground but let the grass grow through the squares. Anyone tried & tested??

It needs to be hard enough to drive 4x4 & trailer over, and not too slippy for the neds in frost. And preferably I wont need to remortgage!

Is this possible?? Any idea's?

When my mum gets round to it we're buying grass mats for our gateways because our mud gets really deep even if we pen it off, and this year they're in the field at the bottom of the hill so will be even worse (the walkway was almost knee deep last year!) so we're trying grass mats..

Not much help though as never tried them but I'd give that a go, it sounds sturdy, won't ruin your ground and shouldn't be slippery. It might be quite epxensive for 120m squared though, not sure how much it costs.

I've just bought some and put them down on mud - it's better than nothing but STRONGLY advise you to get it down before you get the mud if you can. We're not sinking anymore but can easily tell how it's supposed to work if you put them down in advance.

Not cheap either. Ours cost £400 for one stable and an area about 3m by...um...9... maybe

I was lucky enough to get a lot of this matting free, after work had been done on a local playing field. In areas where it was spread out in the summer it works really well, I threw grass seed down before I laid it out and it really anchored well. However, if you have mud then it's too late to put it down. I did that last year in some muddy areas and it's vanished!
I'd be inclined to get a load of road planings, or maybe something like crusher run, dropped off in a large quantity and dumped down. Then you'll always have a nice area for them to stand on and to put hay out.

I'm hoping to get some of that stuff next summer (if I can afford it!) for outside my field shelter. The company I intend to buy it off advised that I lay a membrane down first. Like the weed shield black stuff you get from garden centres, though this company sells it on a roll. They said the ground needs to be level and dry/firm.

The membrane allows water to soak through but not the mud to squelch up through the matting and therefore disappear.

I'm desperate to put something down now, but it's too late as it's a quagmire. Can't bear it.......mud...rain....mud!!
