Hi, i have a beautiful (really the most wonderful dog in the world) welsh springer spaniel who we like to father a litter before he has the chop! He is four now and in the last month has got pretty despirate bless him so would liek it asap. Experienced owners with very healthy well bred dog of kazval breeding. Looking for a similarly beautifull bitch with a good temperament, pref someone with a nice family pet they would like to have a litter from ( not one thats bred litter after litter). No stud fee, services in exchange for pick of the litter which as long as there is one must be a bitch, and only stipulation is they are not to be docked (unless for working)

Just out of interest...if he is becoming 'pretty desperate' then why let him sire a litter before he is castrated? This will probably only serve to get him more frustrated.

Also, the usual agreement with a puppy in leiu of a stud fee is 2nd pick of the litter...the bitch's owners get 1st pick
 
In reply to those unhelpful comments, that is why we want to do it know so we can get him castrated and put him out of im misery. We want him to sire a litter first because he is such a wonderful dog. And did i actually mention 1st pick, no i didn;t think so.
 
Actually if it is a puppy instead of a stud fee then the stud's owner gets pick. Other wise that defeats the object of having pick rather than a fee.

I have to say though it does seem a bit weird that you'll castrate him after using him, that is more likely to make him worse! It wont put him out of his misery at all. If you want him castrated then do it rather than use him.

Why don't you just advertise him as a stud dog and leave him entire? Assuming his temperament/hip scores etc are sound?
Or do you think that would make him more of a handful?

Could you not talk about it with his breeder? Just to get some more advice?
 
I have been advised by a few that letting him sire first before castrating will not make any difference, the castration will work it won't regardless. But letting him sire and keeping him entire will give him the taste for and i don't think he would cope. We would leave him entire but we want a bitch from the litter as long as there is one and also my brother has an English bitch which is what has caused his torment in the first place. I know there is no garantee it will stop him but we don't want to keep using him so it's worth a shot. He is fine in every other respect so if the hormones aren't there hopefully he wont be son randy, that is also why we want it done now before he learns the behaviour is normal.

pick of the litter = 1st choice

I'm sorry but letting him sire a litter then castrating him is not putting him out of his misery, it is likely to make him worse. Castrated dogs can still react to bitches in season, do still attempt to mount them and can still tie. By letting him sire a litter you are teaching him that this kind of behaviour is acceptable from him.

My comments weren't unhelpful, they were offering more information on a subject which I happen to work in, not play at.
 
Still i found the way you put them was in a know it all way not in a helpful way, i appreciate that is your opinion and do appreciate any helpful advise but i have had a more advice to controdict your advise, and at the end of the day nobody knows our dog like we do and we are not playing at it, you know nothing about me and we do have a lot of experience. Maybe you shouldn't assume nobody knows as much as you. Thanks anyway.
 
Have you spoken to your dogs breeder? They may know of a suitable bitch if they are professional breeders?

Cos am guessing you would want to ensure that the bitch you mated your dog with was well bred and healthy so that the puppies produced are good examples of their breed?

Its all very well getting lots of people's advice, but you have to think about how credible that advice is. Unfortunately there are many people out there freely giving advice that is outdated and incorrect.
 
Castration is commonly recommended as the treatment of choice for unacceptable sexual behavoiur towards bitches, people, or inanimate objects. The standard joke about the little terrier clinging to the vicar's leg may be funny if it is someone else's dog, but is a sign of extreme frustration in the dog which can significantly affect his physical and mental health as well as cause acute embarrassment for the owner. An attempt to stop this behaviour can often result in aggression towards the owner, or the dog's current attentions. Related behaviour problems are seen with dogs who will attempt to mate any bitch, whatever her status, even spayed, and also articles of furniture, cushions, and similar inanimate objects.

Allowing a dog to breed first will just incease his desire for a bitch! castrate him without breeding from him.

If you want a bitch puppy, buy one? if you really do wish to use your dog at stud, have you done the KC health checks?

Hips?
Eyes?
Elbows?

Why would a bitch owner come to you, as apposed to one with a Show award or even a field trial award (yes there are a few!)

Widget, no i haven't contacted her yet but i have tried the kennel club and the breed society. Yes you are right i will be very picky about the bitch which is going to make it even harder. But then again the welsh unlike the English are still quite a specialist breed and so there isn't much bad breeding. Don't worry we have got all that side of things covered.

MiLisCer, thanks for the advise but when i said we want to put him out of his misery it may have made him sound really bad, but he only finds it hard when my brothers bitch is in season and is fine with here the rest of the time, and doesn't attempt to hump everything in sight as you suggested, he has never attempted it with anything but her, animal human or furniture. And yes he is as healthy as they come. People seem to have assumed i haven't really though about this and i don't know what i am taking on, but beleive i have and i do. I really do appreciate your help but we're are fine thanks.

People are always going to have something to say when it is something that they feel passionate about

As MiLisCer has already stated about the health tests (hips, elbows and eyes)...these should be done for all dogs intended for breeding, even if it is just for one litter. I certainly wouldn't take one of my bitches to a dog with no health tests, when there are plenty out there that have been screened and have proved their ability either in the field or show ring. Even though your dog may appear outwardly healthy, it may be affected by one of the hereditary diseases which may not manifest itself until later in life.

Mmmm, well breeding dogs is a passionate subject on this forum and ppl can't help but comment on these issues when its so controversial. Take what advice you want and ignore what you don't want. There are a lot of ppl on here who have strong feelings and high levels of experience in this area - they cannot be blamed for voicing their opinions.

I have an ESS and adore the Welshies, I hope you make the right decision for the dog.

I thought the comments j4y made where helpfull........stating that it would be better to castrate without the need to sire....clearly he is frustrated which is why I assume u are making the decision to have him castrated.

I would assume you have carried out the appropriate health checks on your dog and that you have thought about where these puppies could end up......as you wont have much say in this...having the dog and not the bitch?
