That looks like a brilliant piece of kit! Has anyone managed to make something similar out of a standard wheelie bin?

Yes, I did this year, but it's not at all the same. The grazing action is to jerk the neck backwards/ sideways, not pull upwards. A big bin can get stuff left unreachable at the back and in a small one it can fail to drop down if it's packed too tight because they are smaller at the bottom.

I spoke to the stable staff today and they said there no point because he always had a bit of hay left. That's because he doesn't finish his small morning net completely, but he also has a lovely wheat straw bed to eat if he likes, so I'm holding off for now.

He seems happy enough?

I just do the straw bed thing. Provide appropriate amount of hay/haylage for what they need, then the bed is there so no empty tummies once they finish.
