Needing to do a rug overhaul cause they are all a bit tight. I was considering the swish and the epic big horse shop rugs. But not sure if I need the regular fit or broad fit in epic. If anyone has a horse that needs the broad fit can you tell me how broad your horses chest/shoulders are?

I bought a Swish rug for my TB, one with a detachable neck. It was a neat fit on him, the neckpiece was far too tight though! So I wouldn't be buying them for chunky horses.

I am just doing the same. I have ordered two epic second hand rugs off ebay to try for size.

I believe they used to just do broad fit, and then added standard fit fairly recently.

I think if you look at their pictures, standard fit are for fairly slight / small shouldered horses. And you will want broad.

I have realised only one style of epic takes the liners. Think is the epic classic, standard neck. So I dont think the ones I have bought from ebay will take liners.

I was also recommended Optimo, if can find any second hand.

That’s interesting about the liners. I was just going to get a 0g and a few liners so will need to make sure I get the right one.

My Suffolk had very broad shoulders but I found Ruggles fitted better than Epic. The Epic was always slipping down and back while the Ruggles only slipped a little when he lost weight and dropped to 7'3" (lost the fat pads on his shoulders)

Is this the ruggles heavyweight cut versus the Epic broad cut? (So their chunky rugs in both makes?)

If you are after 6ft6 I have two broad Epics coming by post, if you need size guide. Doubt you are local to Surrey though?

I have a ruggles one but it Is a bit snug around the neck and a bit long on him. It’s a 50g but feels heavier than my 100g lol

Is that standard fit or ruggles heavy weight fit?

And do we think that standard rug that is too tight on shoulders would be replaced by a broad / heavyweight cut of the SAME size? I am thinking change cut for big shoulders and not go up a size?

I’m not sure on the ruggles, all my rugs were my old horses but he was an easier fit. I actually think I need to go down a size because whilst he is twice the volume of old horse he’s a lot more compact; that being said the 6’9 shires is verging on short but the 6’9 ruggles is too long.

im going to measure him properly but I def think a broad fit is going to be needed (which means no beautiful prints and cheap rugs can be gotten on whims lol)

Epic rugs are lovely. The lady I do some work for has them.
She has two broad Normandy cobs and they have the broad fit. They are really roomy and could possibly have managed a size down, she usually has to buy 6’9 to get the width.

Thanks that’s useful info :) I’m thinking I can go for 6’6

Be interested to see her without the rug so gauge wideness. Hectors fairly decieveing, from the front he doesn’t look too massive but he’s incredibly deep.

Some reference photos. 16.2

the neck strap is a full size neck piece from a martingale.

When grazing his neck ties in very low which is where I’m having issues also, rugs are always tight around there when heads down

She's about 15.1 and 630kg when you can feel ribs. Rambo, Ruggles and most Shires cut in around her neck - which is very much draft horse.

Very deep bodywise (saddles always look a bit silly)

Mills is definitely broad because of the shoulder width, bit she's not got the shoulders of the full draft. We lost a very elderly 16.3 cob earlier in the year who took 7'6" rugs and the broad was too wide on him - he was ok in Shires so would have fit Regular.

Saying that my friend has a 4yo 14h gypsy cob in broad - proper leg at each corner type

Had a nosey this morning at the broad version and it would be a bit big around her neck but not too bad - I think you'd be ok with that type

Thank you for the photo. I think I’ll go broad, he’s a lot deeper than she looks to be and a full hand higher so more room the better :)
