No they're not powerful enough. They would pull a 505 with 2 small horses. I had to go for the 3 litre nissan terrano to pull my 510. An X trail would pull it empty but not with horses in it!
No fraid not. If you look at the unbraked towing limit in the handbook it will say what the total weight is you can pull.
An Ifor 510 weighs about 1000kg empty. The average horse probably weighs about 500kg x2 your looking at a car that will need to be able to tow over 2000kg. You also need to have enough oomph to be able to tow up hill and to be able to get you out of trouble. H&H did an article on towing a few months ago and it said you shouldnt have a car under 2.5 litre to tow a trailer.
We really stuglled to find a car that could 'legally' tow the weight and that we could afford. Freelanders, X Trails all couldnt do it. Ended up with the Terrano which is fabulous!
My 2.7 diesel Terrano2 V reg cost me £4000.00 with 97,000 on the clock, VGC, tows my Richardson Supreme Rosette 820KG unladen with two 14.2 ponies (850Kg total) fine, I love it.
No sorry we have an X trail and it would pull my Bateson trailer (very lightweight) and my 16.1hh that weighed 535kg, but I wouldn't have risked it with anything heavier.
Your better off with a Terrano or the new Nissan Pathfinder - very nice!
