Sheared heels. Horse developed one in front and one in hind hoof following a six week period without shoes when ice and snow restricted riding and I felt he was safer without. Has a very domed foot and collects snowballs alarmingly. This was about 4 years back. Neither vet nor farrier seem bothered. Horse does occasionally take one short step at walk (akin to us walking barefoot and stepping on a piece of gravel) and I wondered if it might be due to stepping on a stone which went directly into the cleft and "wedged" it momentarily. That said, have never found anything jammed in the splits and it doesn't seem to happen at trot. Hopefully no horrendous stories and vet and farrier right not to be concerned.

I've only known them happen in conjunction with very contracted heels. If that's the case with yours, you need to work on decontracting the heels and thus healing the sheared heels at the same time. I certainly wouldn't want to put shoes on a horse with such deformed hooves.

Do you have photos of your horse's hooves that you could post, including a shot of the heel bulbs from the rear?
