I have Stig and Ollie out, a NF yearling and a *****land.
Then the girls who are wbx and Tbx, and even though they are weighed down with thier thermals, they seem to prefer it to being shut in.
My two boys are out 24/7 with hay given twice a day. Tb has a heavyweight rug and is not clipped and the cob x is furry and naked. Both are doing just fine.
I have a 7 month old appaloosa, a 2 year old cob and a 15 year old warmblood (who is a very poor doer) all out 24/7 in this weather. WB is rugged (a 450g turnout), weanling has a rain sheet so he doesn't get soaked through, but little cob is naked. All have hay and 1 feed a day. All are happy as larry. Infact, WB is doing better this year than any previous year and is actually a good weight and is holding it well.
The horses at our yard haven't had a single day in this winter yet, despite a good foot of snow last week. My horse is a TB shire x chaser clipped with a 360g rug. He is fine and dandy and the turnout has kept us both sane
Mine are in for tea as we speak! Then back out to enjoy the elements. No snow here today, but had plenty last time. They have large round bale of hay that they are picking at a bit, but not overly fussed - plenty of coat, under their rugs, and plenty of meat on their bones, doing well so far!
My NF is out chaser clipped in HW rambo wug. he came in for a couple of hours and some hay and I contemplated keeping him as there is a lot of snow but decided against it as he is not used it and I was worried he might get colic if stayed in and he ate too much hay when he is not used to it
when i put him back out he used his nose as a snow plough to get at the grass.
One of mine is out IdxTB he does have on quite a few rugs and has a big round bale of hay under the over hang of the field shelter so they can eat it from inside the shelter if they want. Only two of them in the field I actually think they have a pretty good deal - all they can eat and shelter, verrrryyyy spoilt.
My DWB has a blanket clip and is out - she has a MW T/O under a full neck HW T/O. She is quite happy out, and her normal routine is in during the day and out at night. Unfortunately it's too icy to get her in at the moment. Plenty of hay in the field for her and her buddies, and fed twice a day
Yep! My Welsh D is out 24/7 and we have about a foot of snow at the moment. He is clipped with a heavyweight rug on and gets fed & field hayed twice a day - he seems pretty happy.
The only thing I have noticed, is that his feet have gone extremely soft from the snow, especially his heels which have gone very spongey - has anyone else found this?
My TB went out this morning. After wandering over to the water bucket (which had a 2in layer of ice on top) and discovering the horses had to cross a sheet of ice to get to it (or go down a hill which could result in sliding into electric fencing), myself and another livery (who has a NFx) decided to get our horses in after we'd finished stables. The field's rock solid, and he won't be out tomorrow.
Our NF is out rugless, and our 20yo arabx show pony is out with a rug and under rug and perfectly toasty.
OH is a bit disgruntled to know they've not been using the field shelter we bought earlier this year (having felt sorry for them in the snow in January), preferring the shelter of the neighbour's hedge. Althought they DID use it a lot to keep out of the flies in the summer.
I've always decided on a horse to horse basis whether in/out... Depending on what antics they'd get up to in the field (and I'm not a massive fan of putting hay out as it causes fights). But this weather is just too regular now even down south to keep them in all the time, so they are all out pretty much at our yard. Even the ones that usually find it all a bit too exciting have accepted it as normal now, so the behaviour is not a problem.
My horse is a fully clipped ISH, the temp today rose to a mighty -1, so she had 500g Rambo Duo on
All out 24/7 as usual! Ground is frozen and rutted but they are very careful, got a few inches of snow now. Give them warm breakfasts and dinners and basically ad lib hay.
WB x ISH: 300g rug, unclipped
Appaloosa: 300g rug, (trace clip but that has almost grown out)
Welshy pony who is quite fine, arthritic and a bit slim: warmish rug, unclipped
Shetland: naked... of course!
They have access to stables all the time and a separate field shelter but hardly use them.
My Welsh D boy is out every day come whatever the weather...he loves being out. He has been wintered out naked so far this year and seems to be fine even in the very low temperatures. He is very furry and carrying more weight than he did in the summer so is fine and dandy. I strip graze him each day to some new area of grass and then he is in at night on hay.
I've just tramped up to the top field to order my two Spanish Mules down and in for some hay and you'd've thought I was dragging them to a funeral! They said Thanks but no thanks and went straight back up the field again.
My TB is out 24/7. He's unclipped with a heavyweight rug with an under rug. He much prefers to be out with his mates than stuck in a stable. I feel sorry for the ones who are cooped up for around 16 hours a day, looking totally fed up and banging on their doors to be out.
