Anyone had a broken shoulder? (Human.)

OK I'm back with an update - mainly because I'm excited that time is passing and I'm not still stuck right at the beginning of this process so this will prob only be interesting for me - forgive me indulging myself. :D :D :D

Thank you to everyone who replied and explained what it had been like for you. It was really reassuring then, and is still so now!

It turned out I had a three part fracture of the proximal humerus, in quite big pieces, and one bit had got displaced and wandered off in front of the tendon and top of the bicep. Op was on 26 Feb so nearly 4 weeks ago now (am counting down, can you tell?!). Am so glad they operated as immediately that it was fixated it felt much more "secure". Once he got in, surgeon found he was also able to get it done with some screws rather than a plate.

Was astounded at how swollen and bruised the rest of the arm went and how painful it was all the way down and around the elbow from the swelling. Swelling's only just gone down to almost normal. Started very gentle physio immediately as surgeon very keen on not setting up compensations / frozen shoulder and siezed up elbow, so weekly NHS physio. Bally uncomfortable. As a sucker for punishnent, and determined to get best result, I've found a private sports physio who specialises in the shoulder, and have an extra set of exercises from him too to complement the NHS physio ones.

Showered throughout with dressing covered by carrier bag and gaffer tape (thanks TS!) and special waterproof sling made by OH out of more carrier bags and gaffer tape :) Stitches out at 2 weeks, surprisingly small scar :) Even surgeon looked pretty pleased with himself at 2 week check up.

Now 4 weeks on, arm is almost normal size, 95% range of movement returned in elbow, wrist and hand strength nearly back to normal and I can proper pendulum swing with the best of them. And with a million strategically placed pillows, I can lie down to sleep, hurrah!! Next steps, start trying to rotate arm outwards (instructed not to thus far on pain of, well, pain and disrupting the bit of the break that's not screwed) and start trying to lift it. Suspect both will hurt!

So hoping that we're genuinely on the way now! Thanks again to everyone who took the time to post, super encouraging :D Can't wait to get back on, or even just be able to do stuff.

Glad to hear you are on the mend!!! Getting away without the plate can only be a good thing!! Very jealous about the scar though.....mine is about 5-6 inch but I hide it with bra straps! I'm sure the next few weeks will fly by and you will be back on board in No time!

Thats fantastic, sounds like it is all going well. With my three scars from the ops, you couldn't even see them after six months, hope yours goes that way too.

Good luck when you get back on. The actual getting on is the worst part, you don't realise how much you use your arms too, and if you have to get off on a ride, you can't get back on without something to stand on! Watch your horse too - my clever mare worked out she could lean to that side and I would give in more when she wanted to go! She became a sly expert at slipping into shoulder in and leaning on my weak side when I wasn't on the ball.

I broke my left shoulder a long time ago. It was a clean break. It took some 6 weeks to heal properly (lift reasonable weight, etc). However, every time the weather changed, especially when it got cold, there was a funny feeling at the crash site. That feeling lasted for some 12-15 years before it eventually gone away!!!

12-15 years?! Wowsers, I'd have thought if it had been around that long then it'd have stuck around forever, how weird!

So I fell off on Weds and broke my shoulder :(

I'm steaming about it because the horse was just coming back into work after a long lay off and now just as she's ready, I'm the one holding us up!

The break is in the humerus but right at the top below the ball bit in the joint. Apparently it's in 'quite a few pieces' and I'm going in next week to have it plated.

Can anyone give me hope about having had anything similar and a sense of how long it might take to be useful again? I know every situation's different, but can anyone throw me a bone?!

Sorry to hear this hope you heal soon.

Ive broken my shoulder blade and clavicle in the 1980's and its causing no end of problems now. I was given no physio or anything back then.

A shoulder might be different , I suggest rest - don't do anything that might be risky and consult your doctor.
