Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has had this op done?

I've had hip pain (mainly during riding) for a few years now and it is getting worse. I finally got my butt to see a Consulatant, had an Arthrogram and MRI done and went for the results this morning. I have got a Labral tear on my right hip joint and he has recommended that I go and see Richard Villar in Cambs to have it repaired, it is quite a specialised op and only a few people can do it. It will be done through keyhole and will take about a month to heal, I will be able to ride again after 3-4 weeks apparentley. I am being referred and will hopefully hear from them soon to go and discuss it in more detail.

I wondered if anyone else has had it done and how they got on?

Thanks

Tricksy

Yes just over a yr ago. I had Mr Masaraff at Eadith Cavell, peterborough. I was told Mr Massaraf pioneared (sp) the surgery. But I hear Richard Villar is fab. Its not as rare / specialised an operation as it was a few yrs ago.

Mine was suposed to be keyhole, but ended up being a mini open labral repair. I'd be very surprised if your riding in 4 weeks! I was on crutches semi weight bearing for 6-8 weeks, no driving for 8 weeks! I had 3 months of intence physio, before getting full mobility and strength back, I didnt ride until 6 months!

The decission to go to the mini open, was while I was on the table, and the recovery was the same for the keyhole,

Its not as bad as it sounds and the time soon flys. I cant believe my op was july 09, it feels like yrs and years ago

If you have any questions, feel free to ask / email

Jill

Thanks Jill for your reply, must admit that I am a bit shocked at the difference in the recovery periods!! But, you have had it done so obviously the better informed! Has it made a big difference to you and improved the pain a lot?

I was surprised that my local hospital could not do it, I have to go to Cambs which is just over an hour away which is a bit of a pain. I'm going to discuss it with Mr Villar and see what he says. I 'could' wait a while as Ibuprofen get me through at the moment, I just don't know what to do.

I'm at work at the moment but will contact you later again

Many thanks

xx

Hi, I had the same op done on my left hip 4 years ago by Mr Villiar but in London. your symptoms sound almost identical to mine. I had a constant pain that at time would cause me to limp and occasionally my leg would almost 'give way'. I was on crutches for a while and weight bearing took longer than I thought. I would consider my op a success although have never really regained as much flexability in it and i found i couldnt mount from the ground anymore - although that might just be me getting old!!!Pm me if you want more details.emma xx

from what I understand and this could well be wrong!! .....your hip joint is a ball and socket, around the socket is a curtain of tissue, it enables the joint to run smoothly and also it is a pressured/airtight joint and it keeps it sealed. A labral tear is when the tissue splits or tears. The tissue then rubs on the joint causing pain and a grating sensation.

I can walk pretty well, I can hobble sometimes without realising. Its the outward movement I really struggle with. My hips don't open up, they are very tight and I get a lot of pain riding. When I first get on I can't sit upright and have to lean forward and ease myself up. I take Ibuprofen before every ride and double dose before a lesson!! When I get off I have a lot of pain in my hips, my legs feel like they are giving way (which they do!) I hobble and it takes a while for me to get upright again!

hope this helps, I'm sure other people have other symptoms which I'm sure they can help you with

:D

Wow, that sounds mega painful. You have my sympathies.

I have outside hip difficulties too and am having my MRI scan tomorrow at the Leas in Cambridge in the hope of a diagnosis. We think it may be bursitis or rheumatism, nothing as serious as a tear, thank god.

Btw., I've had good results with Naproxen, an anti inflammatory that's a bit stronger than Ibuprofen.

Is that at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hosptial? Sorry I'm a Colchester girl but I am being refered to that hospital to see Mr Villar. Not sure what Bursitis is but hope you get an answer from the MRI, have you had one before? Thats how my tear was diagnosed and its SO noisy!! I did take a cd with me but couldn't hear it LOL I did fall asleep in it though!!!

I will have a Google for Naproxen, thanks for that

Nikola :D

Good luck with your MRI, its not that bad really, just noisy! The results take about a week to get to your consultant so fingers crossed this time next week you will have some answers. Let me know how it goes :D

Thanks Tricksy, you're right - it WAS loud ..... and very difficult to stay still under there for 25 minutes.... wanted to scratch my nose after 3 mins and it was driving me mad at the end

Hello, I realise that this thread is quite old now, but my teenage daughter has just been diagnosed with a labral tear, and we are waiting to see the surgeon who will do the arthroscopy.

Just wondering whether you did have the op, and if so, how was the rehab, and have you gone back to riding yet? My daughter has had this pain for 2 years now; sport is uncomfortable but riding is particularly sore. So sore, in fact, that she gave up her big fat cob and started riding my skinny little ex racer. This was ok for a while, but she has stopped riding altogether now, and would be happier about having an op if she knew it would mean that she could get her life back.

Really keen to hear other's experiences, good or bad. Thanks!

Hi ya,

I'm actually having my op tomorrow  I'm absolutley terrified but fingers crossed it will all be ok. My surgeon is Richard Villar, the best in the country apparently so I am in safe hands. I am lucky that I have been able to continue riding, allbeit painfully but at least I can still do it. I just have very short stirrups and find that helps, my dressage saddle kills me, hopefully for not much longer though.

I will be on crutches for a month with no weight bare for the first 2 weeks and touch weight bear for the next 2 weeks following that.

I'll let you know how I get on :D

I hope your daughter gets sorted out soon

Well I've had it done and I feel amazingly good :D

I can not fault the hosptial, they were all fantastic and looked after me (and hubby) so well. It was a very long day, had to be there at 7am (its 90 mins from our house) and didn't go down to theatre til 1 o/c, I was down for a good few hours and discharged just before 7.30pm. The Op itself went very well and Mr Villar was really pleased with it. I am really quite mobile, allbeit on crutches but I'm not in any real pain. I think the Tramadol are helping with that but its just discomfort really and stiffness. I keep moving around as much as possible and doing my excercises to keep the circulation going.

Tell your daughter that I reckon she should have it done as soon as possible. Where abouts in the country are you? where would she have it done?

Tricksy xx :D

Wow Tricksy, that's really good news, and very encouraging for my teenage daughter, thanks!

We are in the North East, and currently stuck on an NHS waiting list :( so no idea when the op will be - sooner the better we reckon, as she wants to be fit again for PC Camp this summer (not sure that this has anything to do with riding though!).

Thanks so much for letting us know, and keep us posted!

Good luck with the recovery, and keep taking the tablets!

Nag Nag Nag xx

if she is on the waiting list it shouldn't be too much longer, I think they have to have offered you an op date within 4 months of being on the list or something like that, fingers crossed she is well enough for PC next summer ;) xx

There are a few of us on here who have had it done and everyone as far as I'm aware have all had good experiences/results :D

Hi again, daughter now seen our surgeon - Ali Bajwa, he did a hip block under anaesthetic for her last week, and is going to repair the tear and impingement in 3 weeks:eek: After putting up with this problem for over 2 years, the end is finally in sight :D

How are you getting on with your rehab? Any tips and tricks??? Would also love to hear from anyone wlse who has had this done, and tips from other mums about how to deal with hysterical teenagers about to undergo surgery for the first time!

Thanks xx

That is great news that you finally have a resolution in sight :D I am getting on really well, I am now just under 8 weeks post op and now have no crutches and the physio has been stepped up a notch and its damn hard BUT I went for my 6 week check 10 days ago and they were so pleased with me that I can start riding again 2 weeks time, about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Obviously taking it easy but at least its a start.

I was pretty good at doing as I was told and the major thing you have to do is the physio. I was lucky and didn't have any pain at all really although in one respect it was a hinderance as I wanted to do more as I felt I could, you just have to be very aware that you're labrium takes weeks to repair due to a very poor blood supply. Tell you daughter not to be scared, honestly if my other hip goes I wouldn't hesitate in having it done and I am a big scardy cat!

Good luck and keep us posted on how she gets on :D

Tricksy, bless you! So delighted for you, and daughter has just read post too. We are both scared but excited to be nearly at the end of this:confused:

We'll let you know how she gets on, and ENJOY your riding when you get back in the saddle - I hope your horse has been kept ticking over!

NNN xx

I am getting back on on Tuesday 22nd, can't wait :D

A good idea would be to have a chat to the anesatist when they come round. I told mine that I have little panic attacks when I get in the anestetic room and they were brillilant, seriously within 30 seconds of getting in there I was out, it was great and didn't give me time to panic about it. Make sure you tell him how nervous your daughter is and I am sure they will take really good care of her :O)

She will be fine and when she can ride, pain free in the summer she will wonder what she was worrying about :D Good luck xxx

Tricksy-glad to hear your op has gone well.
May I ask what your symptoms were? I have had hip pain riding for the last 18 mths, I did go to the GP a year ago and he basically made some crack about John wayne and suggested Physio, which kind of put me off going back but its getting beyond a joke now and am going back in a few days to push for a referral.
I dont think its arthritis as its not all the time day to day but riding is killing me at the moment, ibuprofen 30 mins before just not touching the sides now :D
what really hurts is getting on, first five minutes is just agony, luckily my very patient mare (who now knows more swear words than she did) is very patient and will stand while i manouvre my leg into position, ride side saddle for a bit etc. getting off for last 6 mths have been unable to chuck leg back and have to bring it forward over front and slide off. just one leg really is bad

My mare is wide and that hurts more than riding a narrower beast.
Also painful sitting/driving long periods and sometimes feels like its giving out.
Does this sound familiar, not looking for an online diagnosis, just some ammunition to stop the wisecracks

Hi ya,

it all sounds very familiar :( I used to get pain in what i call my groin but the consultants call my hip, it is a deep inside pain and it felt like my hip wanted to click all of the time. You know when it gets 'caught' and you know if you can just click it it will realease it, I got that a lot. I used to walk/limp without realising it, sort of swivelled my hips along to compensate, although again I didn't realise I was doing it.

My legs moved forwards and backwards pretty well, no probs there it was outwards and opening up my hips. I too was referred to physios who told me I had muscle strains  I could get on reasonably well but when I sat on the saddle it was agony. I'm lucky too that my mare was very understanding! I couldn't sit up straight for a good 5 minutes, as we walked along I could ease myself upright but it did blinking well hurt. After half an hour of riding the pain started to really kick in again, I would end up coming back with my left leg swung up on the pommel to take the pressure off. Occasionally I even walked back as it was less painful than riding. Getting off was a nightmare as like you I couldn't swing my leg over. I had to stand in one stirrup and try and prise myself off, it took a while! I couldn't ride without pain killers, I took ibuprofen 400mg at least 3 times a day and if I had a lesson I'd take 4 half an hour before.

My asked my gp to refer me to our local private hospital as i'm lucky enough to have private health. I saw a brilliant consultant who sent me for an mri scan and this showed the impingement and labral tears. I have a tear on my right hip as well but its not too bad at the moment, its the left that was the worst. He explained what the op would entail and told me that its quite a specialist op and is only done in a handful of places. I could chose from 2 hospitals locally (well within 50 miles!) and I totally fell on my feet by chosing to go to Cambridge and seeing Mr Villar. He and his team were fantastic, I can not recommend them highly enough.

I would certainly push for a referal, good luck and I hope you get something sorted soon

xxx

thank you thats really helpful
Luckily we have health insurance so will just press for consultant referral, decided this morning when riding that it was get it sorted or take up side saddle :D

Your local private hospital will start the tests/mri/xrays then you will probably be refered on. I don't know where you are in the country but Mr Villar has clinics in London and Cambridge. He is the best in the country apparently, he also pioneered the op......apparently!!

Good luck, don't wait another day, get refered you won't regret it :D

Hi,I hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread but I have been referred for a hip arthroscopy in Cambridge with Mr Khanduja .Like you I am managing at the moment with volterol and ibprufen.I don't think I have an impingement but do have a labral tear. Can I ask how you are getting on ,when I saw Mr Khanduja last week he was really up beat however i have scared myself witless with too much internet research ,so it is really good to hear a positive feedback.
My worst worry is that it will be worse not better as I feel I can manage at the moment but on the other hand it is not going to get better on its own is it?so the sensible thing would seem to be to get it done sooner rather than later .Were you on crutches for long and were you able to have the physio locally ,he has suggested the Nuffield in Ipswich as that it where I had my original MRI and have been having physio.
any feedback or experiences would be helpful,I hope you are now back riding again.

Hi Woodentop, this could be a quick one as I am literally waiting to be picked up to go out!!

I am doing really well and I am now back up to riding 4 times a week, I could do more but my friend who has helped me out with my girl while I was unable to ride has enjoyed it so much we have agreed that she will keep riding her 3 times a week for now.

The pain has gone in my hip, I do have some discomfort but it is muscular, not my hip. My muscle doesn't seem to be able to remember that it doesn't need to protect me anymore, I am having physio every couple of weeks or so to help get over this. It is perfectly normal and apparentley I am doing brilliantly. I was on crutches for 6 weeks officially, in reality I was using them outside and just one indoors from about 4 1/2 weeks and none indoors from 5 weeks. I would not hesitate in having it done again if I ever needed too.

I am having physio done locally and luckily I have an amazing one, he is just brilliant. Where abouts do you live? I am in Colchester and could give you his details if you like?

Like you I over Googled and to be honest I almost backed out of my op too but I am now so glad I didn't. You will be fine, the Spire Leas is an amazing hospital and you will be very well looked after.

If you have any questions at all please ask away :D
