Anyone had a horse bite their tongue?

As the title really... anyone had a horse bite their tongue? My boy was sticking his tongue out for a photo tonight when turning him back out (his party trick after a mint) and I noticed two grazes on it, consistent with front teeth maybe? Ridden him tonight and he rode as normal and ate hayledge, his tea and two stolen apples without a problem.

I'm sure the grazes will heal, not much I can do with them anyway. Anyone had a horse cut their tongue and how long did it take to heal? Will try and post a photo.
 
Ow, looks sore. I don't suppose there's much you can do for that really.
I have to say when I read the thread title I thought the horse had bitten YOUR tongue!

Suppose I can't really put cream on or anything either :( I'm hoping it will heal on its own. Feel dreadful I didn't spot it earlier but it's not something I routinely check. Maybe I should?
 
I also thought you meant a horse had bitten your tongue :D

What about bonjela or similar for mouth ulcers? (Not sure if ok for horses, suggest to double check first!)

I thought that too! I think you can use bonjela. Vet said I could if horse was teething but obv check that with yours first!

Ditto!

As others have said, OP, I don't think there's really anything you can do. If in doubt, then a dab of Bonjela wouldn't harm him. As long as he's eating fine, then I'm sure it will heal in time. ☺
 
Mine bit through his tongue years ago. The blood was horrendous - it looked like a murder scene!!!

Not much you can do, but vet had me syringe out the mouth with warm salty water twice a day. Just to help prevent infection.

It healed well and was absolutely fine within a few weeks.
 
Mine has cut his tongue before, dentist told me to syringe some water in to his mouth to wash it out for a few days and leave it alone, it healed pretty quick.

Funnily enough had exactly the same thing happen to one of mine last week and vet gave me the same advice. My dad was a dentist and he always said that mouth injuries heal really well.
 
We used to have one that bit his tongue out hunting - he was a strong puller, and would open his mouth (cavesson noseband) and lean - he'd then snap his mouth shut on his own tongue. (not the brightest horse in the world). Stopped him doing it with a flash strap

The tiny cuts would produce a lot of blood - and that's why they heal very quickly - the mouth and tongue have a very good blood supply and cuts or ulcers heal very rapidly. (these would heal within the week)
 
Ah thanks everyone! Feel a bit better now :) it wasn't bleeding so luckily I've managed to see it once it's stopped, not even a trace of blood on his mouth.

Haha no he's not bitten my tongue, that would be weird :D

Another here who's previous horse but her tongue. We were out riding and she just zoned out (later found out she had a brain tumour) but we were cantering at the time and I just couldn't do anything, no steering, no brakes, she just stayed at the same speed on the same course. It was the most scary thing ever but she stopped when she hit into a tree (luckily all happened very quick). She was a lucky girl as her only injury of note was that she'd bitten the end of her tongue off. We got some odd looks getting her back home I must say.
She actually had stitches put in hers but then also the saline washes.
 
My ma's old TB has marks like that a bit further down his tongue as he insists on having it poking out a bit and holding it in his teeth 90% of the time when he's not eating. He's 29 now and has done it for as long as I can remember.
 
My boy has managed to bite a piece of his tongue right off this week 😁 Vet says it will be fine and is healing well. No idea what happened to make him do it. He was doing weird things with his tongue when we spotted it
 
Bizarrely my bigger boy has these constantly on the end of his tongue consistent with the two front teeth, he is 12 now and has had them since I got him at 4, they are always there, my dentist hasn't a clue why as we have never seen him bite his tongue and he isn't the sort to poke it out at any time whilst riding or anything.

Oddly I have noticed my mare sometimes has them as well, now she is a tongue poker and also sits her tongue between her teeth when concentrating hard.

And I am sure I have seen my tiny pony with them at some point.

I did wonder if they were consistent with grazing muzzles at one stage but only my boys have muzzles, my mare never wears one.
