Anyone had a horse officially measured...?

I have always had the farrier remove the shoes.
If there is any doubt that the horse will measure 'in' then the feet can be trimmed right back.

The other thing is to get your horse relaxed with the measuring stick.

You are expected to arrive with the shoes off, if you are trying to get the horse under height it helps if you practice at home getting it to stand properly, relax and drop its head so it is level with the withers, if it is used to having a stick on it and will keep still the measuring will be quicker and less stressful for you and your horse. Get there a little early if you can so there is no rushing around, the vet will give you time but cannot wait all day for a horse to relax in order the get under the desired height.
Hope it goes well:)

thanks - we practiced today and looks like he is 15 hands with shoes on but I need him measure over 148 cms otherwise I can't register him with sport horse breeding society as a small hunter.....

After looking at pics online I think he is of small hunter type most...although will prob end up putting a pic up so others can confirm and I can double check... :)

Have his shoes taken off but don't have his feet trimmed if you are worried he won't be over 148.

If he's not keen on the stick, stand in front of him and cup your hands over his eyes, this makes my horse really relax!

Funny you should say this . . . we've been saying for ages that GD looks and rides taller than the 16.2hh he was advertised as when we bought him . . . but I've never had him measured . . . might ask my farrier if we can do that next time he's shod. Thing is, he has really low withers and a really flat (and short) back so he rides bigger than he looks.
