I was told a week ago that my horse would never be sound again, he is only 5 and I was devastated.

I took him to Liphook for a second opinion and they have narrowed it down to an old racing injury in his knee, it basically doesn't flex as much as a normal knee. He has been sound up until October but since then been intermittently lame.

He is now on Cartrophen jabs, one weekly for 4 weeks. He is due his 2nd one on Friday and am wondering if anyone else has had them and whether their pones improved?

My mare was given a course of them, one a week for 5 weeks when she was diagnosed with a high suspensory injury. She didn't actually have a suspensory injury at all and so kept getting worse until I got a second opinion when she was diagnosed with something else, so I dont think we saw any benefit at all.

Good practice though for me injecting her myself!

Not for a horse, but my labrador has them for OCD in his elbows. They really help him, has a course of three jabs then a booster periodically when he needs them.

My vet is a big fan. My horse had a course of injections when my horse was diagnosed with a torn tendon coupled with badly damaged cartilage in her foot. I have no idea whether it actually helped, but she's sound now (18 months after injections) and we weren't entirely convinced she ever would be!

Amy had them when diagnosed with ringbone - can't say if it did any good really because I retired her the minute she was diagnosed - and she had come sound generally through box rest. However, at 17 I decided I would rather retire her to the field than risk further deteriation of the joint by riding.

She went two years later through a bad tendon injury.

Yes, my horse recently had a course of 4 jabs for a tendon sheath injury, workad a treat and now leg completely normal. I think it must have had a systemic effect as he is going better than ever now!

My horse has had them twice - once when he did a tendon (bad tear) and then again after arthroscopy on his stifle, both times he came sound, I am convinced it helped him.

My dog had 4 x weekly injections for a spinal problem in December. She is doing great at the moment and does not appear to have any discomfort (fingers and toes crossed).

My mare was diagnosed with slight arthritic changes in her coffin joints as a 5 year old. She had an initial course of 4 injections at weekly intervals and now has one every six months.
She is 7 this year and so far has stayed sound so I have to recommend Cartrophen
