One of our competition horses has came in with a broken hip this morning, absolutely gutted.
Does anyone have any experience of how long it takes to heal, or if the horse has returned to ridden work etc?
Any stories, successful or non, we would be grateful, never experienced this kind of injury before :(
Thanks :)

Knew someone with an ex racehorse who had broken part of her hip - not sure which unfortunately which doesn't help. What area is it suspected in this horse?

The mare had on and off lameness and a depression in her muscle which was never explained (she healed before said woman bought her) no idea how she is now, but the mare did novice hunter trials and showjumping quite happily in her later teens

A horse on my yard broke his pelvis (long before I moved there). He's just been retired at 17 (was used mostly for hacking and some v. light schooling) as he struggled up hills ridden and it's very hilly where I am! I think he was back in ridden work for a couple of years minimum, but as I said, it was very low key work. He was also getting very sore in his back, and the physio has apparently said he's much happier now he's not being ridden.

Dianchi, yes it did, but not the same as Shirley's youngster, it is very very similar in the same place but not as deep.
Horse is a young 5 year old, really good jumper, hope it doesn't restrict him :(

My NF broke his hip (snapped the sticky out bit at the top of the joint) as a 2 yr old. He literally dragged his right hind along, it was awful.
He had 6 months complete box rest & was still lame but a 100% better & no longer dragging so we turned him away for a while & he gradually came sound.
Left him an extra year before starting him and he did struggle (and still does sometimes so needs regular physio)
That was 7 years ago.
He would have been something else had he not had his injury but as it is, he does alright (& has regularly beaten the big posh dressage horses :-)
Really glad I didn't pts. At the time I wanted to as he was wild, literally, being fresh off the forest but husband & vet persuaded me to give him a chance.
I hope your ned mends well x
