Don't often post in here, but wondered whether any of you lovely people have/have had experience with Concorde horses.

What are they like? Do they have any common character traits etc.
Any tips when *trying* to ride one?
Anything I should know?

Thank you all
J

My mare has concorde as her grandsire, she is very sharp, spooky, clever and quirky but can be quite talented when she concentrates which isn't very often!

Yeah, she can be difficult and is a bit of a wuss most of the time but on a positive note she is a total sweetie with not a bad bone in her, very kind and loving mare, definitely keeps you on your toes!

If I remember right I am sure the Gillespies used to have a chestnut stallion Conquest who was by Concorde later jumped by Billy Twomey.
I used to jump against it in the novice classes and he always seemed to be very well behaved and level headed even as a youngster. Lovely looking horse too and very talented.

I have a 4yo by Phanten out of Concorde. He has always been Mr opinonated since he came out his mum.

Always the big I am and fairly exuberant from an early age. (some of my previous posts ie rearing in hand will confirm that). He was never frightened of anything and could quite considerably be classed as quirky.

However when he did his ground work and was switched on as a youngster and did futurity from the age of 3 months, he focusses amazingly.

He is away being backed/produced at the moment. Has been there 4 weeks and is happily cantering with rider on on the lunge and walking/trotting off the lunge and the riders are really pleased, he is being so well behaved.

I always think the talented ones have a bit about them

Big and bold, great fun to ride! have a bit of an attitude sometimes but more a quirk than bad! I always found them laid back to handle and really liked riding them

We've got one who's 6yrs old, he's got lovely paces and sensible head on him, we do dressage with him but he jumps once a week for fun and has a really bold confident jump but polite in the hand. He's a real softie in his stable too

I have an older concorde model (13yo) and he is absolutely wonderful. He can be a big baby at home, spooky and a bit naughty but once he gets to a comp he really gets down to business and focuses, amazing canter in dressage that always gets remarked on and a fantastic jump - clears the paltry efforts I head him at by a country mile!!

He is very powerful, you can really feel the energy all built up in him when he's working. I could see that he could be considered a relatively strong ride but I think all those horrible ponys that ran away with me when I was little have taught me a few tricks so I can keep him under control most of the time!!!!!

He was left from ages of 5/6 to 11 to fester and got rather messed up, but I daresay if he'd been kept on track all through he would be somewhere pretty marvellous by now. He is the loveliest natured little chap with masses of character and makes me giggle all the time with his funny ways.

Just seen request for *tips* in you OP. Mine can get his knickers in a twist sometimes and the secret to this is to just sit there and stick to your guns. With mine, I have to be the calm one, if he gets wound up I just sit there and he eventually gives up/works it out.

Mine occasionally naps and my instructor gave me a great tip the other day which is to spin him round really quickly twice then kick on. It works really well.

Also mine has never really done much XC. Even though he's pretty brave and a bit of a jumping machine the ditches, drops, water etc can confuse him a bit. Instructor tells me to head at it then take leg off completely and let him work it out. Also works really well.

WOW! That sounds scarily like mine :D
I have found that the *firmer* you are with mine, the more she gets wound up, and just wondered whether this was typical of horses of this breeding.
Oooh, horses eh? Who'd have 'em? XD

Hahaha - that is funny. Would be so interesting to ride another one to see what it's like!! What Dam is yours out of!!?? (Doubt it's the same one cos of the age difference though!)

Yep, I rarely smack mine as it just sends him crazy, another tip from my instructor is to make him do 2 or 3 strides backwards if he's naughty instead of smacking him and keep repeating every time he does it until he realises what he did was naughty (which is usually pretty quickly as he's a clever stick!). Also if he knocks a fence at XC he gets very wound up (I think this may be because he was a bit brutalised as a young show jumper and is expecting me to lay into him). 2 years on he still doesn't realise that I don't have a problem if he knocks a fence!! He's so clean at SJ that XC doesn't really matter - apart from for his own safety!
