Ive had the vet out this morning to see my mare. He thinks she may be 'tied up' shes on box rest until Friday when he is coming back and if necissary doing a blood test.

Just wondering if anyone had had a 'tied up' horse and what the symptoms and outcome were.

Hi Jayde. I've worked with racehorses for many years and have know quite a number of horses that were prone to tying up. Although nobody knows what really causes it there can be many steps taken to try and reduce it happening again.
Firstly you asked what the symptoms are. The horses will suddenly go stiff behind, this can be during or after excersise. You will see muscles tremor on the rump and the horse unwilling to move and stand with back legs spread behind.
Protein seems to be a major factor to horses tying up so cut out any high protein feed you may be feeding. Also although vets recomend horses to have box rest we always turn horses out in a small ring or paddock to encourage them to move. Any horse that was a tyer is also ridden out every day and NEVER has a day off. Make sure you do plenty of warming up before you ask any more strenuous work to be done. Did your vet give the horse a shot of bute? Haylage is another factor which has been linked to tying up (again due to protein).
Nutrolac is a very good but supplement to aid horses with this problem.
If you can turn the horse out before you ride it for an hour this should also reuce the risk of tying up or if you have a walker put the horse on before and after ridden work.
Best of luck with everything!

Tying up or Monday Morning disease. it looks quite bad when it happens but a day or 2 off exercise and cut down on sugars i.e carrots sugary chaffs will help. High fibre diet is best. You must keep the muscles warm so keep the horse well rugged and give them lots of water to flush out toxins. I would get a detox remedy i think Global herbs do one. Always warm up and down this is very important!

Please don't shoot me down in flames - but we had a hunt horse who was prone to tying up, an old farrier said to try giving her Epsom salts everyday, just a small amount. From then on she only tied up once and that was during a hard day.

Yep Epsom Salts are brilliant and they are also brilliant for horses with puffy legs. I have heard that Martin Pipe used to give his horses that tyed up Baking Powder.
