Anyone had experience with fractured spint bone?

Had a horse with an open wound and fractured splint bone, he had an op to take out fragments, completely successful, he came back to full work and later passed 5 stage vetting.

The strange thing with this one is no wound or obvious sign of injury? Vet has just prescribed rest, 4 weeks box rest and now he is out in a small field but still lame?

Mine did a displacement fracture of hers, box rest and cast for a couple of months. During that time and between X-rays it broke off all together but X-rays showed it had started to fuse so left alone with option to remove if caused trouble at a later date. That was 3 yrs ago almost and never had a problem since.

Thanks guys, good to hear these success stories, treatment seems to vary dramatically! Will pass all this on to my friend!

one of my previous horses went lame with no apparent injury, was lame for about 3 month and it turned out to be a fractured splint bone which he recovered completely except for a splint on his leg x

Mine fractured hers in 2 places on her left hind at the end of August, they were clean fractures with no fragments. However wasnt picked up as a fracture at first  she had 4 weeks off whilst the surface wound healed. No lameness at all. Vet cleared her for being back into work. We then lost a shoe in November - didnt feel right (because of splint caused by shoe wacking her leg) had the vet back and then xrayed - turns out all along she'd had the fractures but never any lameness. She had 6 weeks paddock rest, it healed really well. I then brought her back into work over about 8 weeks.

We were lucky with hers in that it didnt cause any lameness and that they were two clean fractures. There was some bony reaction (small splints) caused as a result of the healing process (it knitted on the outside first) but using compagel and having the time off soon reabsorbed - you wouldnt know to look at her leg know that there was ever a problem which i'm pleased about!

Yes, another success story from me! Mine had an open wound and fractured splint bone when he came in from the field one day, presumed a kick. His fracture was worryingly high, in bottom 2/3 gives best chance of non-surgical healing, but with 16 weeks box rest he came right. Now 3 years on, he never has had any problem and done everything we've wanted to with him. He has a splint but it is only cosmetic and never bothers him.
Best wishes for a quick recovery.
