My 26yr old came in as normal today.
I noticed she lay down when I was about to leave for a comp which is unusual. No sweating or distress.
one girls on yard called me 3 hrs later as mare kept getting up and down, no sweating or distress and was pooing normally
got back, mare looked a bit depressed then ok. Walked her in arena and she rolled twice, not in a distressed way and normally rolls once in there.
walking her around as worried about her. Still no sweating and shes very fluffy and had a rug on.
then she lay flat out and went unresponsive, no muscle tone on her, so her tongue was out and muzzle flopped, did very brief twitching like they do when asleep and dreaming, got up and walked about in a joggy normal way.
Then after a few min same lay down as if dreaming.
did this about 5 times.
never sweated up, breathing normal but pulse a bit fast. Just looked exhausted.and very pale gums.
vet arrived. Did rectal all felt good, good gut sounds, poo a tiny bit dry but nothing too significant. Horse bit perkier but still quiet.
gave her hydration by nasal tube plus pain killer.
bloods processed show no anaemia.
waiting for full results monday.
horse eating soaked hay and lots more normal now but no one any wiser to problem....
when she lay down I thought she was just going to pass away right then. It was awful....
anyone any ideas?
 
Sounds like some sort of mild fit with the flickering etc, my dog use to be the same was called petimalls. if she does it again or goes down as often again film it the vet may find it helpfull in a diagnosis, good luck i hope shes ok
 
Arrggghhh - please mention caecal impaction to your vet. You may have seen my thread about Spike, who is at Liphook at the moment, after displaying very similar symptoms. They said to me that caecal impactions can be tricky to diagnose as the horse can still pass droppings due to the location of the caecum, and the pain they cause is not as intense is colic elsewhere, so often goes un noticed until the impaction is quite severe

Apologies for being completely OTT - but that's exactly what Spike was doing
 
It sounds to me like some sort of neurological problem that could be primary like a minor stroke or epilepsy,or secondary in response to something going on in the body, could she have eaten something she shouldnt ? Just saw you had vet so edited post.
Very strange, possibly some sort of transient ischaemic attack ?

Acing normal but quiet to laying down acting as if asleep about 6 times.
what kind of neuro tests are you thinking?
I will ask about the caecal impaction.
ive soaked her hay to keep her hydrated.
very worried, shes my baby, ive had her since 4yrs old and im so worried about her. Shes always been very spritely and well.
 
Has your horse had access to acorns or sycamore? We had a horse with similar symptoms who went downhill rapidly, the vet thought it to be sycamore poisoning.
 
If she had a tia surely she would have some kind of sign remaining after 6 of them?
She walks fine, shes acting normal when I left (walking around the stable, calling as she doesnt like being in the stable) will walk her for 15min, check pulse, resps and gums at 9ish......
 
Just checked her she was pacing about the stabke, lively.
ate a soggy chaff feed
she had eaten about 1.5 slices of hay since 6pm.
turned her into arena and lay down right away got up after few min to lay down again.
walked her inhand for 15min she didnt seem to want to lay down again.
 
Seems bit better tonight.
vet gave another bucket of fluids plus salts, rectal he could feel over dry stuff in but she still produced. She did 6 poos overnight. Ate hay all day but had episodes of flat out dreaming....
did 3 x 20min walking and gave her some bran soups. Not allowed hay now so shes on hardstanding pen with a square of grass to nibble, which shd is grazing. Done 4 poos this afternoon, wants hay, only laydown 2 x.....
waiting bloods monday.....
