Anyone have a Land Rover Freelander? Realised I have a bit more money to spend on car so have revised my ideas.

Main query would be fuel consumption? Looking on Autotrader it claims about 37mpg which isn't tooo bad IMO, but was looking for some real life opinions.
How often do you fill up/how much does it cost? I know this depends on miles done etc but a vague figure.

Have a pretty clued up bf so should be able to avoid the models that tend to go bang.

I wouldn't be doing silly mileage, just Uni two days a week/odd trips to the bfs house, so about 200 miles a week... as all my work is within walking distance.

Any opinions on them welcomed, as deciding between Freelander and a Mini. Not much difference.

Except Pedantics.

As you even slag off Defenders so your opinion is void.

I have one and really like it. It is not that bad on fuel but nowhere near as good as trusty old Skoda which was really economic. I would say 37mph is about right. But if you don't really need a bigger vehicle for any reason like towing I would say a mini may be a more sensible and economic bet for what you want it for.

Cool.

I don't really need a big big car tbh, but I'm being a typical 19 year old with no real outgoings and going for the cars I've always wanted, either a mini or a landy.

Wouldn't be towing (and have OHs defender for that if needs be) but do need fairly large space for horsey gear/Uni stuff. So many decisions.

If you want an economical but spacious little car I can highly recomend a Diesel Renault Clio - I love mine - I get about 55mpg + out of it and it's got a relatively spacious boot but the back seats also fold flat meaning you can get more in it - I've had 6 bales of shavings in the back of mine ;o) trouble is, the diesels are so cheap to run that people keep hold of them...

Freelanders are nicknamed Freeloaders, IME I have seen them to be unreliable and in and out of the garage frequently. I'd get something else to be honest IMO.

I used to have one and loved it when i had it but when i came to renew it the price of them was stupid so i went for a Kia Sorento and love it much more, you get alot more car for your money. Fuel consumption is much of a muchness (quote from OH

The only thing i really liked about the Freelander was that the back window used to go down and you could put one of their grills up and it was fab for the dogs but as with everything we like, they don't do it anymore

I presume you are talking about a diesel engine with that sort of fuel consumption figure??? If you are mostly doing short trips then your fuel economy will drop considerably - i think you will probably see it go down to about 23MPG. I have a jeep Cherokee diesel which I do similar mileage in a week (around 200 miles) - shortish journeys to and from work (18 miles each way) and longer trips at weekend. I get around 36mpg on long trips and on average about 23 for trips to work, it costs me about £45 a week in diesel!

IMO I would get yourself a smaller car if you don't need to tow or lug loads of stuff around

I have one and really like it. I have a 2ltr diesel TD4 and had no massive problems with it. My yard is about 4 mins away from home and work is about 6 miles. I dont think they are that thirsty. I dont really know what the MPG is to be honest but i put about 20 a week in and i do seem to do a lot of running about in it.

Not sure that helps your decision...

I love mine and have had no real problems with it. Mine is a 2 litre diesel - i understand the petrol engined ones have had real problems. Am looking to upgrade in the near future and will definitely have another.

Thanks everyone.

Not even as a free gift, but if you do go down that route, get at Td4 or don't bother... and don't tow with it. The Mini is better in every way.

It would be a TD4 I think. Would rather have a Disco but don't think I could convince the parents

Will have to keep thinking. If I could have a 4x4 mini estate I'd be sorted

as Uni is 35/40 miles (motorway) each way, and we live up a steep hill which isn't gritted in winter and Uni is rural as well. And tiny boot space in mini would be an arse when going home to Ireland.

Hmmmm.

i had one and i would NEVER have one again! i hated it very unreliable, rubbish to tow with and a horrible drive, no room in the boot i could go on all day.........
