We picked one up on Tuesday for the huge amount of £450 (from a friend)

We drove back on his Operator's License so had to use the Tacho (incidentally he's given us the VOSA DVD regarding Tacho use as he says we should be using as a private person even under 7.5t)

When we got back we left the tacho setting where it was - went to move her today for farrier to get in and battery flat! Doh!

Three questions here:

1: She has 2 batteries next to each other - does this mean she's 24V?

2: What setting should we move the tacho to? We've moved it and the red light has gone off

Is that it?

3: On the dash to the left of the steering wheel is a pull/push know with a red top - what the hell is it?

Thanks

yes you are correct in thinking its 24V, secondly if the batteries are flat this means that the tacho light - has run the batteries down - common fault - easy solution - get an isolator fitted.

OK! Will tell OH with me being a mechanic phobe!

Next question then - can I just take the batteries off and charge on a 12v trickle charger one at a time?

Edit to say - don't think it bakes - would be nice though

Could be! Bloke said to turn off with key, I'd try it but the battery is flat! I've got the same thing in my old Bedford TL860 but it's the Hazards in that - MAN has a rocker switch on dash for hazards!

I have an S reg MAN 8163 & all I can say is get a battery isolator switch fitted - about £50 - to stop the Tacho draining the batteries!!

Ive owned many trucks over the years for road haulage and for driver training. It is unlikely that the tachograph will drain the batteries,I have never known it and some I have had have stood for months. Most likely batteries are knackered. Be very careful changing batteries if you have no experience of 24 volts, you can arc across batteries and burn yourself very badly. Red light will come on if tachco is not closed properly or no card in tacho, red light will show at 50mph. Good luck.

Is the red button unlike ant other switches in the cab? If so then it could be an isolator swithc for a tail lift or an internal light if the truck was fitted with one before you had it but the switch left in the dash but not connected.

The correct settings for the tacho should be driver 2 swithced to rest (little picture of a bed) Driver 1 driving (picture of a steering wheel or a square with a diagonal line through it)

That's brilliant - thanks alot guys - think OH must have opened tacho when we got home and not quite shut it - he had left it on drive though

So is the guy who we bought it off (coal merchant) right in saying we MUST use the tacho even if private use? We never have in the old lorry other than having to have it calibrated and sealed

The knob is completely different to anything else in the cab - it's like a light pull shaped knob about 2" tall - could it be an isolator??

Where do we get the tacho cards from if so???

You can get tacho cards fron any truck service agent it doesn't have to be MAN as the same tachos are fitted to virtually all makes, I am guessing you need ones with the pear shaped hole. A box of 100 will cost toy about £4-5.
