following on from the cob thread i thought i'd see if anyone has a new forest pony, or a new forest cross and what you do with them?

I Have a NF x ID !!

He's not quite 3 yet and everyone asks me what i want to do with him.

A lot if people have suggested Working Hunter. I'm not into SJ,XC,Dressage etc.

I do like the idea of Drag Hunting though...

What do you do with yours?

We have a Newfie x Sec D.

She is an all round superstar and best friend. Done all PC, hunted, eventing and SJ. Evented at BE Novice/PC Open and SJ up to 115cm. One year was on Open team Tetrathlon, SJ and Eventing. She is full up 148cm.

She is now in foal to Future Illusion (TB X Trak) and if the foal has just half of her heart and generousity it too will be a superstar.

Hey, i loaned out a 5 yr old new forest geldig from my mate, we broke him in, i did alot of hacking with him, as we both loved to go exploring, we also did a gd bit of jumping 2, as he had a realy nice jump. I think the lassie now is makin him in2 an all rounder.

I did find that he was very mischivious, to start with as he had the tendancy to bite, barge n take off, bt after i worked with him more he lost those habits, and became a lovly pony with manners ( i personally think it was due to him bein aloud to behave in that manner, and no1 had stood up to it all and told him
Off for it)

me me me!
Charlie is our family NF, 14.1, 16 yrs old, we have had him since August. I love him just a bit too much, :D he hacks all winter, schools and jumps at home in summer, and we are hoping to do a couple local shows (jumping and basic fun showing ie family pony etc) this year.
He is a fab hack in company, can be stubborn though! will hack alone but naps terribly if he can get away with it.
Hes just a great allrounder and I adore him! I ride him too as Im only 5'1", this is he \/\/ with my daughter.

I have a forest bred NF pony. She's a 13.2hh chestnut mare and I show her, we do a few local shows, also county shows and have been to Ponies UK a few times :)

I have a 13.2 'chocolate dun' NF mare who is now getting on in years ( 18 this year) but has no intention of slowing up. Bought to give my youngest daughter confidence, I've inherited her and I love her to bits. We do mad galloping hacks, along beaches and through the forests and I do low level dressage & s/j with her. My eldest does m&m workers with her and show jumps a bit bigger. She has been the Best New Forest inteh NPS Perfomance awards for two years. She is great fun but pretty intolerant of other horses ( especially big ones!) I am v old and no lightweight but she is safe and has no problems carrying an adult.I used to ride foresters years ago in the forest and they are the best ponies ever. will post picture if work allows time!

Lovely to hear of so many NF crosses and to see some pictures too!!

Mine is a 5 year old 15.2 chestnut NFxTB. She's got a lovely personality, tries her heart out for you and has lovely paces. I bought her to be a nice fun allrounder, she needs bringing on and more confidence in general, but sadly she's managed to hurt herself so has been out of work since December and we've been referred to a specialist vets for more investigations to find out what is wrong with her neck. Currently she is a very very unhappy pony.

I'd love to have a full up 14.2 full forester, but I'm waiting to see what the prognosis is with my little mare first.

Aww, Balexis really sorry to hear of your mare :( Hope you find out whats wrong and get her going again.

I have a Forest Bred NF just turning 4 this year so not yet backed but the idea is for her to become an allrounder - she has lovely paces so will do some dressage, SJ I think she'll do well at (currently loose schooling over small jumps) and hoping to do some M&M Hunters :)

One of the NFs on our yard is a prolific jumper. He's 14hh, and I've seen him clear 1m 35 with ease. He is like a mini Prestige St Lois de Hus though - he bucks and kicks between each fence like a nut. He's won nearly everything I've seen him enter though, even though he wastes such time. Other pure NF is 4 and a little pillock, but will probably go on to be a great PC and SJ pony once he's learned his manners.

I've got 3 NF's all forest bred so "proper" ones rather than stud bred.

Basically almost all of them can jump well if given the opportunity.
Dressage, it was a team of NF ponies that won the British Riding Clubs quadrille thingy at Olympia last Christmas, so they are quite good at that too.

Of my 3, 2 are ridden, but only one is at the moment, both the mares (half sisters) are in foal. We have done gymkhana, hacking, all PC/RC activities, jumping - SJ and XC, showing, hunting. Mine also take part in the annual round ups with my daughters, which is pretty fast and furious. What else is there?

They really can do pretty much whatever you want, and they usually do it with very good humour too.

Here's a link to a website that can tell you far more than I can. I could bore you with photos, but I'd struggle to choose which ones to put on!

We were given the most wonderful 14.2hh reg NF mare last year. This is our first experience of a forrester although we've had numerous other horses/ponies in the past.
She is rising 10, but only just been backed. She appears to have a sweet temperment and loves hacking out. Aim is for daughter to PC her,and show locally. I don't think she's quite county standard sadly even though she's well bred, otherwise we'd county show/WHP her too.
If she carries on being as lovely as she currently is, may consider breeding from her too, to get something slightly bigger as we're both tall so ideally could do with another hand on her. She looks like being a fantastic, geniune all round pony.

NF's are a british native breed that should be respected...as should ALL Natives

gypsy cob ponies are, IMO not on a par as the Natives of the British Ilses

they are two'a'penny (the so called gypsy cobs)

Me too... had my first NF X TB over 20yrs ago, he was a fab all rounder, really versatile. Now own a 'proper' forest bred reg NF. 14h, rude, bargy, bitey ASBO boy. He has been there and done it. Bombproof hack, good allrounder and I would put a baby on him. Just a bit rude on the ground, usually food related but he will take on the biggest horse in the field.
Also own NFX WB, my horse of a lifetime. He is a pretty beautiful boy, 15h such a fantastic nature. I would reccommend anything with NF in to anyone they are fab, and I come from Hampshire originally and had many fab hacks in the forest. :D

I have New Forest and he does everything that an average big horse can do (though he will never do three day eventing round badminton, win grand prix dressage or a pussisance - but then most big horses won't either)

He does all the senior riding club activities and has done Le Trec and county showing in hand. Yes he has short legs and is hairy but it does not stop him winning the riding club points trophy. People often forget how small he really is.

Sometimes his cheeky pony nature gets the better of him and he will have a small tantrum but most of the time he is a darling with a lovely nature and he is very athletic for his size. He can jump high and go fast if he wants to. He is also an incredibly good doer and lives out on very sparse rations. I wish I could give him more food to be honest but he would ballon out.

Also what is rather cool I think is that I can trace his pedigree back to the godolphin arabian!

Although my forester is stud bred I still think he is a proper forester as he has lived out on the forest and is hardy enough to do so.
