Anyone have a partner allergic to horses?

Yes I do its a nightmare as we have the horses at home. Not to bad at this time of year as clipped, rugged and general allergens are low, worst time coat changing have to keep a set of clothes outside to avoid bringing in hair etc I do actually feel very sorry for OH because his nose streams, eyes & ears hurt & sometimes can bring on asthma but antihistamines do keep it under control but he doesn't like to take them everyday, no wonder horses aren't his favourite animals !!

Yes. He can't come in my car without taking antihistamine, we have to hang out coats up separately, they can't even touch. If we go and watch competitions in an indoor arena he has to sit in the canteen etc etc.

Don't know where it came from as I managed to get him to ride a couple of times when we were first together. If he's within 6 ft of a horse his eyes start streaming and then the sneezing starts.

If he ever annoys me I put my yard coat on his pillow for a wee while :biggrin3:

Me too I'm afraid. He can just about cope if he's outside, but if he comes into the barn he too gets the streaming eyes, sneezing and other respiratory issues. I think it's more likely to be a hay and dust thing, but he has had problems when exposed to things like dirty stable rugs as well, so maybe not. He also gets fainting attacks when he sees my livery bills but that's a whole different matter ......

I'm allergic to horses! I do find the more I do the less the allergy effects me. I've just had a week off work and I can guarantee the first couple of weeks back will kill me.
I have allergic asthma aswell as the sneezing runny eyed sort of allergy and my Dr prescribes me Montelukast Singulair which I take daily and without it feel like death.
Might be useful for those of you the asthma side is a problem for (although it massively helps with all the symptoms)
My Dr told me it was designed for idiots like me who insist on continuing to expose themselves to allergens 😂

Poiuytrewq, what is the drug you take? My OH I allergic to animals and asthmatic...we have two dogs, two horses and a cat - He loves animals .

My husband was very very allergic but over the years with constant low level exposure he can now handle my horse and we go for walks together. But he is only desensitized to my mare interestingly other horses will still make him sneeze!! When we were first together he bought s battery powered respirator so he could come and help me he looked funny but my horse was completely use to him while others freaked out!! So don't give up the same might happen for you! 😀

I'm allergic, it tends to be worse in spring and can cause allergic asthma. the antihistamines help, I tend to take them spring . summer, when its at its worst.

Montelukast Singulair. It's a little pill you take before bed as it can cause drowsiness (never effected me like that though)
I really do rate it.

My Dad is allergic to horses, the more time he spends around them the less sneezing and itching - except clipping, he can't be around clipping. My partner is also allergic to pet hair and has hayfever, he just has to take an antihistamine everyday and he is fine :) Its managable x

Me. Dh really suffered when we bought our original pony, but he has built a tolerance over the years as long as he doesn't get too near or groom them. But every time a new pony cones,he is back to square one again. He does suffer when we go to indoor atenas with strange ponies though. He is also allergic to cats, and we had a feral give birth to 6 kittens in our garage. We tamed and rehomed the kittens, kept two, plus the mother (all spayed of course) and he adores them and they don't make him poorly,to begin with he took anti histamines but do esnr need them now.

My sister was severely allergic to horses, when I had a Pony as a child, I had to wear cagoule type clothing to ride in, remove it away from the house and shower before I could go near her, even then she had such severe asthma attacks that she needed a nebuliser. Now she accompanies me and the girls to Pony stuff and just gets slightly itchy eyes and a bit of a wheeze on bad days, but nothing like she used to.

I went out with someone who was horribly allergic. Relationship didn't last long!

Youngest son is sensitive to the dust in their coats and hubby is allergic to hay. Useless family. :(

My OH struggles. He is not quite allergic but whizzes, eyes run etc. I am used to it as my mum was the same. So tack cleaning, washing of saddle clothes etc all outside. I can remember cleaning tack on the patio in dec freezing as a kid! I also have to keep horsy clothes etc in boot room and never go to bed without a shower/bath ii I have ridden or mucked out.

Yes my OH comes out in nasty hives, and he seems to be getting slowly more sensitised. Hoping baby isn't going to follow suit. He's ok as long as he doesn't actually touch them, so is still good for mucking out and the like ;)
Can't get him to take antihistamines though, typical doctor.
