I'm off to see some baby RID's at Indigo Irish Draughts next weekend. I've never had an ID before but have been recommended them over and over as something which may boost my confidence yet have a little bit of sparkle too.

My main requirements are something even tempered, trainable, and stress free! I've had enough of highly strung and hot. I want to do a bit of everything but dressage is my main love. Getting to advanced medium one day would be fab :)

Does anyone own/compete one? Experiences and advice on what to look for when I see these 4yr olds would be great!

Many thanks :)

Me too :D Ive found that taz has been one of the easiest horses ive ever had, we have done a bit of competiting, won our riding club dressage winter + summer points when he was 5 :) has a huge jump on him and can hack for miles :) I cant give advice on what to look for, im no good at things like that, but I would never have another horse that wasnt an ID or at least a IDx

I have gone from TB's to an IDx with a fair chuck of ID in her - love her to pieces.

Genuine, fun, and loves to jump!

Tr0uble - I saw pics of your boy on the FB page. He's gorgeous! Did you get him as a proper just backed baby? What was he like to bring on? Sorry for all the questions. Just excited!!

We have one pure ID 16.2 lovely lovely horse a squarer more old fashioned type than tr0ubles beauiful boy he's a fab horse cheeky character but very sensible he knows how to look after himself and therefore my OH.
He's a good jumper and a nice mover but schools aren't really his thing he's an amazing hunter so that what he does he's been shown before we got him he did not enjoy it TBH I think it's why he hates schools , we love him.
I much prefer the 'pure' ID to the ID /TB cross whose temperaments can be very variable.

Yep, proper backed baby...bought him as a 3.5 year old...think he'd been under saddle for 2 moths? Not much longer than that, and he was walking trotting and cantering, hacking alone and in company.

Four weeks after I got him home I was assaulted and had my knee smashed, so he was turned away for most of his four year old year.

Then after my surgery I started carefully riding him, and he looked after me like I was made of glass!

Once I got my strength he came on in leaps and bounds and is so so trainable! He's calm and polite, you can boot him forwards if you need to, without any explosions, but mostly he's so responsive that you only need to think forwards and he responds!

Sounds wonderful!! Did you know anything about the stud when you went! ? I'm really nervous. Long way for me to go so eager not to make a fool of myself :)

I 'knew' Janet through the Saddle Up forums...but that was it.

I'm totally socially inept and rubbish at meeting people so I was nervous! Was a 2 hour drive for me to get there.

Everyone was lovely...gave me the tour, had a great day!

Which horses are you going with a view to look at? Rhythms full sis has been backed recently ;-)

Meant to add...your original post could have been mine when I was looking!

If had the precocious warm blood, wanted safe, fun but talented all rounder...but dressage is my main interest!

So prob worth mentioning that R scored 82% and70% to win both his prelims last Sunday ( only our fourth comp)

We have a 14yo IDx (but she is mostly ID) and she is the most fabulous schoolmaster. Has never been sick or sorry in her life, and competes PN eventing and 1-1.10 SJ.

She is a total 'point and kick' machine, and we are planning to breed from her this year to hopefully get a mini Sophie.

Best of luck.

Oh - looking at 4yo's, they can be very coarse looking if that makes any sense and still make up into a beautiful horse as a 5 or 6yo. Just late to mature.

This is our girl as a 3yo, and def not the prettiest horse on the planet..

OK mines is not registered but pretty certain he has a fair large chunk of ID in him (vet also swears) he is the most genuine and willing lad I have ever knows over the last 25 years - would not now have anything else!!!!
He has a little fan club who all adore him.
Great pop in him, easy to train, sensible, moves well - hope that helps - pics on my profile album xxx
good luck
