Anyone have a small lorry without Power steering??

Just wondered, does anyone have a lorry that doesnt have PAS? Is it ok to drive or very difficult. I am looking for my first lorry and have found one without PAS, just thought i would ask all your expert opinions!
 
I sometimes drive my friends 7.5ton with no power steering, ok mine does have PAS so it is a real shock to the system. Only thing to remember when driving one without PAS is it's easier to steer when moving, even very slowly. But you will get used to it.
 
I did, but OH has just fitted Power steering. I was ok without the power steering, you just have to think carefuly when making a turn and graps the steering wheel firmly. The difficult thing is manourvreing aroung the yard, it builds your biceps up a bit.
 
I have an old Bedford TK 5.5t at home that doesn't have power steering. It is okay to use when it is moving, but low speed manouvres are harder. I think some ladies might struggle with it tbh

Agree with both of you! Then I upgraded to a 7.5 tonner with no PAS - heck of a lot heavier and in order to turn round in my yard it's at least a 5 point turn. Trick is to plan your manoeuvre and make sure you only try to turn the steering wheel when the road wheels are turning.

(I'm currently wasting time on here to avoid having to go out and turn her round after I just sort of dumped her in the yard this morning.)
 
We have the same as Moodimare and my husband drives it as I'm a big woos. He says its hard work sometimes but its a great runner

I've got a 6.6 ton without PAS and it is fine, doesn't feel heavy at all. No PAS - 1 less thing to go wrong. can be a bit expensive to fix.
 
Applechaff - I have a renualt dodge that OH has just converted to power steering. He got a power steering from a mark 2 dodge (it was a fire engine). He sorted it in a weekend, he did have to replace something else sterring linkage end things????**** Should have paid more attention to him. The power steering bit was £90 (from a scrap yard) other bits and bobs around £40. If you had it done by a garage would probably cost a lot more. The only thing I need to find out is whether it will need a retest as its now been modified.

I could cope fine without the power steering, just had to get the thing moving, however the old steering box linkages had some play so OH said if he was going to replace them he would upgrade at the same time.
 
Thanks for the answers. I knew you would all be able to help. That puts my mind at rest. It is a Dodge i am looking at so should be ok.

but he drives the lorry nearly every weekend and never complains about all the waiting around in the cold!

Stilton - we love our Renault, it has never not started and wouldn't hesitate in getting another one
