Anyone have a VERY short backed horse? Saddle suggestions needed.

My show jumper was 16hh very short backed and i rode him in a 16.5 saddle a 17 inch was too long and sat too far back!!

hi i had an issue with my welsh sec d. I needed a wide fit and to accomodate me butmy mare has a shortback. I brought a wide fit 17 1/2inch reactor panel saddle but with short panels. that way the seat was my size and the panels were her size!!! the perfect solution
i am currently selling my saddle it you want any more info but the reactor panel provides a fantastic solution to both horse and rider

Haven't read all replies but my 15hh tb mare who is very close coupled was looking at a 16" in a normal saddle (which was a tad too small for comfort for my arse!)

After numerous saddle fitters she was fitted very successfully with a Jaguar 17" as the pannels on them rise up at the back and do not have a "skirt" that sits directly on the back

Ah - thanks. Just had a look and I see what you mean. Do they have their own fitters?

Sorry havent read all your replies but my 16.2 cant take a saddle longer that 17 inch due to his last rib finishing short. We got round it by having a Jaguar as it has the sweeping back which gave me a bit more room. The Amerigo's are the same principle, sadly all expensive saddles. Recently I had him measured for a new saddle as his Jaguar has seen better days and we went for an Albion with shorter pannels but it didnt work out as I think all my weight was over the back of the pannel, so I was lucky to get a refund and we are sticking with the clapped out Jaguar. :)

Mine was fitted by David Ashton of Village Saddlery - so I would presume they will have certain trade reps?

It was an expensive saddle but it was also made for my height and you have a choice of types of leather etc.

You can also have the tree changed by Jaguar for not too much money should you change your horse - so basically a saddle for life for the individual.

Also, whilst I have really looked after mine, it still looks as good as new

ETA as mentioned by the poster above Amerigo are the same idea and these were my other option - they are a bit more from memory - not really my cup of tea but I think if you jump they would probably more your thing

Thanks all - so much to take in! I hate feeling like I need to be an expert in everything. Surely that's what I'm supposed to pay people for

I'm 5'6" and 8st, quite lanky build. Yes I do sometimes feel I need a smaller seat, but with the forward cut for my thigh.

You do need to be an expert for your horse - I would question every other expert extensively!! Its your horse, you know it best and yes, you would think thats what you pay people to do - get it right for your horse - but you are the only one who will because every expert has a different opinion on whats right - so sorry - you can't hand over the reins to someone else without really monitoring it!!
